Uconn Huskies Gaining Momentum to Join Big 12

Uconn

There is momentum building between the Uconn Huskies joining the Big 12 conference as soon as 2026. Multiple reports have come out from Front Office Sports and CT Insider in the past few days saying that there will be a resolution sooner rather than later.

Coming off of back-to-back national championships, Uconn is the premier basketball school in the country. The Big 12 over the past few years has been the best college basketball conference top to bottom in the nation. It is a real possibility that this will spell the end of the complicated marriage between Uconn and the Big East.

Uconn Huskies On the Move?

The Uconn Huskies have dominated college basketball for the past two seasons. Currently, they are members of the Big East conference. One of the biggest draws for fans to the Big East is that basketball is king. It is one of the few conferences at the top of college basketball that doesn’t take a back seat to football.

Now why would Uconn want to leave that? The answer is, of course, money. Currently, Uconn does have a football team that does not play in a conference. They are one of the bottom-tier Division 1 college football teams. If Uconn were to bolt the Big East for the Big 12, their football team would eventually follow suit down the road in 2031. It just seems to make too much sense.

CBS Sports College Basketball Gary Parrish analyst joined the Jessica Benson show Monday morning to discuss this. Parish went in depth about how aggressive Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark is when it comes to basketball. Parrish says “Yormark believes basketball is undervalued”. By adding the top basketball program in the country to their conference, it makes the Big 12 even greater. Football is the only sport driving media deals and conference realignment right now. Yormak is planning to change that.

The Effect on College Basketball

If Uconn does leave for the Big 12, there would be a lot of mixed emotions across the college basketball landscape. After temporarily leaving the conference in the mid-2010s, it would be their second exit from the Big East.

On one side, fans would be excited for another basketball powerhouse to be in the Big 12. Uconn versus Kansas, Uconn versus Arizona, and Uconn versus Houston every single year would be theatre. Those matchups are incredible. Uconn and Kansas played at Allen Fieldhouse last season in an electric atmosphere.

On the other hand, fans would be sad to see the Big East get its biggest brand poached. There are some phenomenal rivalries in the Big East that would take a hit with the loss of the Huskies, The energy of Big East crowds and the Big East tournament is unmatched. Matchups such as Uconn against Creighton and Uconn against Villanova would be no more. The never-ending cycle of conference realignment continues.
