Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk Fight Preview: The Heavyweight Championship of the World

Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk

This Saturday should be an intense fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk in Saudi Arabia. This is a highly anticipated fight between two of the best boxers in the world. It was postponed twice, but finally, it’s going to happen.

The first postponement happened late last year when the fight was moved from December 2023 to February 2024 due to Tyson Fury having a fight in October and wanting more time off. It was postponed again when Fury suffered a cut near his eye while sparring just weeks before the bout. It was moved to May, so here we are, just two days away from battle.

The first undisputed heavyweight title fight since 1999. All the belts are on the line! It’s hard to predict what kind of fight we will see. It could go different ways. What type of fight will this be?

Tyson Fury is a fighter who has never lost, but he has been close. Memories of him waking up after being knocked out cold by Deontay Wilder in the 12th round of the fight in 2018 were probably the closest Fury smelled defeat. He bounced back from that, got up, and somehow got the fight called a draw by the judges. It was a close decision that has been debated.

Fury is an extremely good boxer, one of the most technical heavyweights of all time. He has quick feet, he isn’t a flat footed fighter like many in the heavyweight division. That’s why he is so hard to beat; he never stays still in the ring. The problem is Fury tends to take chances on offense that leave him in a bad spot like he did against Wilder in the 12th round when he didn’t have to. He was probably winning the fight in the cards at that point.

What will Fury’s endurance be in this fight? He can’t expect to win this in two rounds. This may be a 12-round fight that goes to the cards since he is fighting an extremely smart boxer in Usyk who doesn’t take chances if he doesn’t have to. If Fury had trained hard and had endurance, he could have won this fight. If he didn’t, this may be a one-sided fight with Usyk dominating.

Oleksander Usyk Knows He Can Beat Tyson Fury

This is one of those cases where Oleksandr Usyk is a favorite, but no one wants to admit it. Usyk has the resume; he has beaten the best of the best in the heavyweight division, and it wasn’t close in any of these fights. It started with him defeating Tony Bellew by knockout to retain his belts in 2018, and people started noticing him. Then, he defeated Derek Chisora through a unanimous decision, and Usyk completely dominated Anthony Joshua twice, solidifying himself as the best heavyweight.

That’s right I said twice, the second fight was a split decision but in no way that is fact. Usyk clearly showed he was better than Joshua, and for many years, Joshua was the poster child of British boxing. There was always hope that Tyson Fury would fight Anthony Joshua just to settle the score once and for all. It never happened. If it had happened, would Fury have been fighting Usyk this weekend? It’s a good question because Fury may be, in fact, at the same or lower level than Joshua. This Saturday, we will find out.

Oleksandr Usyk just needs to outbox Tyson Fury. He can’t fall for the mental games or talk the Fury brings to all his fights. Usyk needs to establish the jab, get Fury tired, and play good defense, and he’s got the fight. Sure it may look ugly and boxing is desperate for an exciting “rock em sock em”, bloodbath type fight this weekend. We all see the state of boxing; it’s pretty sad. It’s gotten irrelevant, UFC is kicking them in the you know where.

This fight could bring heavyweight boxing back to the forefront, or it could fall into obscurity with no highlights and no memorable moments.
