Tyson Barrie Free Agent Options Includes Three Teams

Tyson Barrie

NHL defenseman Tyson Barrie is currently a free agent and looking for a new team to play for in 2024-2025. Barrie played for the Nashville Predators for the last two seasons. He played in 41 games and scored only one goal and recorded 14 assists. His plus/minus rating was -10.

Barrie is 33 years old and there are teams out there that could use his services. Three of the other teams that he has played for in his NHL career so far are the Colorado Avalanche, the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Edmonton Oilers.

No Return To Nashville?

Tyson Barrie

Last season with the Nashville Predators, Tyson Barrie made it to the playoffs as a wild-card team in the Western Conference. They lost to the Vancouver Canucks in six games in the first round of the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs. Maybe Nashville could bring him back, but they made other moves to the roster this offseason. Two of the biggest moves they made were signing Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault. The Predators no doubt will be Stanley Cup Contenders this season.

Bleacher Report’s Joe Yerdon believes that Tyson Barrie is still one of the top free agents on the market. Yerdon said about Barrie:

If a team is in need of an aggressively offensive-minded defenseman, taking a shot with Tyson Barrie might be the way to go.

Barrie is coming off a tough season with the Nashville Predators in which he played just 41 games and was often the odd man out of the defensive rotation. The lack of ice time and games played in general turned into a trade request halfway through the year. A trade never happened, although Barrie did work his way back into the lineup during the Predators’ playoff run.

Still, in those 41 games, he had a goal and 14 assists and utilized his slick skating and puck-handling to the best of his ability. His advanced stats were not ideal, unfortunately. Of all Predators defensemen that suited up last season at 5-on-5, he had the lowest shot attempt-for percentage (44.1) and expected goals-for percentage (46.4). Despite that, those numbers were vastly better than what he did in Nashville two seasons ago.”

Which NHL teams could go after Barrie?

New York Islanders

Barrie is no doubt past his prime, but the New York Islanders could always use the depth on defense. Noah Dobson was the best defenseman on the team last season by far and somehow made the postseason. They lost to the Carolina Hurricanes last postseason. Scott Mayfield and Ryan Pulock are the other right-handed defensemen on the roster. Tyson Barrie could replace one of those two in the lineup.

Pittsburgh Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins only have two right-handed defensemen on the roster. Erik Karlsson and Kris Letang are the only ones and they could use a third one. Pittsburgh is looking to win now and they feel like Tyson Barrie could be another player that could help them win now in the Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin era. General manager Kyle Dubas has made some moves this offseason to try and make the team better. However, they could be one of the worst teams in the NHL this season.

Vegas Golden Knights

The Vegas Golden Knights flamed out in the first round of the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs last season against the Dallas Stars. Vegas has three right-handed defensemen on the roster and they are Dysin Mayo, Alex Pietrangelo, and Zach Whitecloud. Tyson Barrie would be a great depth piece for Vegas. They could use some more veteran presence on the back end. Barrie would be another quality leader inside the Golden Knights locker room.
