Tyrell Hatton is one of the world’s top golfers. He’s also known for his hot temper and foul mouth. Earlier this year, Hatton left the PGA Tour for LIV Golf where golfers don’t earn world ranking points. Yet he’s still managed to climb up the world rankings. Here’s how.
Colorful Tyrell Hatton Wins World Ranking Points
Tyrell Hatton is one of the world’s best golfers. His accomplishments prove it. The Englishman has seven victories on the European Tour (now known as the DP World Tour). He won the PGA Tour’s prestigious Arnold Palmer Invitational in 2020 and has posted five top-ten finishes in golf’s major championships. He’s also played on three European Ryder Cup teams.
Hatton is also known for his “colorful” personality. He’ll throw temper tantrums, break clubs, and scream expletives when he hits bad shots. While some certainly find Hatton’s behavior offensive, it can also be looked at as funny and entertaining. It’s refreshing to see someone who cares so much about playing well and winning.
$60 Million To Join LIV Golf
Tyrell Hatton also jumped from the PGA Tour to the hated rival LIV Golf (hated by the PGA Tour at least.) Judging by the low television ratings, golf fans don’t much care to watch LIV. The upstart tour is funded by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF) which appears to have more money than God to throw around. The outrageous sums of money they offer are enough to make many PGA Tour stars jump to LIV Golf.
Reportedly LIV Golf paid Hatton the substantial sum of $60 million as an enticement to switch tours. The difficulty in turning down a mountain of money that could eliminate financial worries for generations is understandable. Yet those who jump ship to join LIV Golf do face a big dilemma. While LIV golfers do earn big bucks, they don’t earn something perhaps more important – world golf ranking points.
LIV Golfers Risk Missing Golf’s Biggest Events
World golf ranking points matter because entrance into many of golf’s biggest events is determined by one’s place in the Official Golf World Rankings (OWGR.) While earning points on the PGA Tour, Tyrell Hatton practically lived in the top 20. His highest rank in the OWGR was fifth. As a reward for his outstanding play, Hatton qualified for all the big events.
Despite playing well enough in LIV Golf events to earn over $16 million this year, Tyrell Hatton’s spot in the OWGR dropped to 38th. That leaves him in danger of missing out on the next Ryder Cup team and golf’s four majors: the Masters, US Open, PGA Championship, and Open Championship (Americans often call it The British Open.)
Tyrell Hatton Climbs To 20th With Big Win
Yet Hatton climbed up the OWGR with his third win at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship played at St. Andrews in Scotland last weekend. Since this tournament is sanctioned by the DP World Tour, not LIV Golf, Hatton won enough points to climb back into the 20th spot in the OWGR.
Based on his ninth-place finish at The Masters last year, Hatton has already secured his spot for next April. Still in question is his eligibility for the US Open, and the Open Championship. To qualify, the Englishman will need to remain in the top 60 and the top 50 respectively. His victory last weekend also won him spots in some other upcoming DP World Tour events. If he plays well and continues to climb the OWGR, we can all enjoy Tyrell Hatton’s entertaining antics in some of golf’s biggest events next year.
