Tyreek Hill’s Bold Claim: “I Would Beat Noah Lyles”

NFL fans vote Tyreek Hill top player in the league.

Tyreek Hill claimed that he would beat American track star Noah Lyles in a race on the Up & Adams Show on Monday. Lyles won the gold medal in the men’s 100-meter race at the 2024 Olympics. He is the first American man to win the event since Justin Gatlin in 2004. Hill is one of the fastest NFL players. He was arguably the speediest player until wide receiver Xavier Worthy was drafted by the Chiefs this year. Worthy ran a record 4.21 time at the 40-yard dash. Hill ran a time of 4.29 when he participated in the 40-yard dash in 2016.

Comparing The Two Athletes’ Speeds

Tyreek Hill’s top speed was 23.2 miles per hour on a kickoff return in 2016. Noah Lyles’ top speed was 27 miles per hour in the men’s 100-meter race. From that alone, it does not look good for Tyreek. Maybe he could beat Lyles in the 40-yard dash, but in a slightly longer race, that is the gold medalist’s forte. 100 meters is 109 yards and unless Hill has run from end zone to end zone on a football field, he is not used to running that far at once. He might be ahead at first because of that explosiveness getting off the line but like in the 100-meter race, Lyles can come from behind and win.

Cheetah isn’t even the fastest wide receiver in the NFL anymore and he wants to go up against the big dog: a guy who solely runs for sport? Hill has to focus on many actions when playing football, tracking the ball in the air, jumping sometimes, catching, dodging defenders, and also running. Lyles has honed his craft solely on running, and he’s gotten pretty good at it. I don’t see this working out very well for the Dolphin.  I think Hill has gotten hit in the head too many times if he thinks a claim like this is true.

Tyreek Hill: Better Than Mahomes?

Tyreek Hill didn’t stop with Noah Lyles though, he also said in his interview that he is the best player in the league, topping Patrick Mahomes. When asked if he was better than the two-time MVP, Hill said,

“Yeah for sure, I’m him.”

This claim holds more water to me. It is still very much arguable that Mahomes is better than Hill. The NFL’s most recent top 100 list put Hill at No.1 and Mahomes at No.5 to many people’s surprise. But coming off of a down season for Mahomes in 2023 and Hill’s best year yet, the case could be made that the Dolphins’ No.1 wide receiver is the NFL’s best player. Mahomes threw for 4,183 yards, 27 touchdowns, 14 interceptions, and a QBR of 92.6. Throwing for over 4,000 yards would be a great season for many other quarterbacks, but when the three-time Super Bowl champ threw 5,250 yards the season before, 2023 is seen as a below-average season

Even so, Tyreek Hill has tough competition even at his position. Justin Jefferson, CeeDee Lamb, and Davante Adams are all top-notch receivers. Hill had one of the best seasons a wide receiver has ever had, recording 1,799 yards, seventh all-time for receiving yards in a single season. 13 touchdowns aren’t bad either.

Final Thoughts On Hill Versus Mahomes

So, is Tyreek Hill better than Patrick Mahomes? Yes and no. He certainly had a better season stats-wise in 2023 but he had a more talented team around him and Patrick Mahomes’ offensive weapons were not very strong. Rashee Rice is not one of the better No.1 wide receivers in the NFL. Mahomes took his team back to the Super Bowl and won it again against a fantastic 49ers team. And he did it all with a roster that is below Super Bowl-caliber.

This makes Patrick Mahomes the better player overall because he was able to carry a team back to the promised land despite a rocky season. Let’s not forget what incredible plays Patrick Mahomes can produce. He can make plays that very few other quarterbacks can make in games, like no-look passes, and elite scrambling skills.

Getting back to Tyreek’s comments about being faster than Noah Lyles. It’ll be interesting to see if he responds to Hill about this comment. Maybe the two will even stage a race somewhere. That would be quite the sight and I’m sure it would blow up on social media. Here’s to hoping that happens.
