Tyreek Hill Hires Super Star Lawyers Known For George Floyd Case

Tyreek Hill’s 2024 NFL season was derailed before it began after a police encounter pre-game turned aggressive. Hill managed to impress in week one, despite finding his hands in cuffs just hours before they were catching touchdowns. The Miami-Dade Police Department released multiple bodycam angles of Tyreek Hill’s September 8 detainment after public demand. The footage showed Hill’s McLaren with a decently high rate of speed before his stoppage. The violation ticket revealed Hill was going approximately 60 MPH in a 40 MPH zone.

‘Cheetah’ pulled over quickly and handed over his I.D. with no resistance. He admitted his wrongdoings and quickly requested the ticket, not wanting to be late to Hard Rock Stadium. After Hill attempted to roll up his window the apprehension escalated to physicality. Danny Torres, the administrative officer in charge of the traffic stop, demanded that Hill roll down his window. When Tyreek partially rolled his window the officers demanded he step out of the vehicle. As he attempted to step out of the vehicle, officers grabbed Hill and aggressively placed him to the ground, securing him with a knee to his spine.

The Dolphins star wide receiver talked about the progress in bringing the officers involved to justice,

“There’s been some small steps moved forward,” Hill told reporters on Thursday. “We’ll kind of lean on you guys to get the word out and spread the message, but right now it’s just small conversations. It’s almost like contract negotiations.”

The Dolphins Response

The Dolphins stated that they were “saddened by the overly aggressive and violent conduct directed towards Tyreek Hill, Calais Campbell, and Jonnu Smith” and added that “there are some officers who mistake their responsibility and commitment to serve with misguided power.” Campbell and Smith arrived on the scene to question and diffuse the situation after they noticed their teammate Campbell was also placed in handcuffs.

Officer Torres has been revealed to have a history of suspensions before this egregious policing performance. Police department records show that Torres has served as many as 50 days of suspension in six different incidents from 2014 to 2019. Torres was placed on administrative duty after the bodycam footage was released.

Tyreek Hill Hires Notable Lawyers

In his press conference following the Dolphins’ 20-17 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tyreek Hill posed a simple question regarding his police interaction.

“Had officers not realized that they were interacting with Tyreek Hill – a well-known, beloved, educated, and seemingly wealthy black man – this traffic stop would likely have ended with the driver in jail, in the hospital, or like George Floyd, dead.”

Tyreek Hill has expanded his legal team to include an attorney who previously represented George Floyd’s family in their 2020 civil case. The wide receiver seeks to leverage his experience to advocate for national police reform and support the passage of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. Hill’s original attorney, Julius B. Collins, announced on Monday that he will be joined by Jeffrey A. Neiman, Stephen B. Kelly Jr., and Devon M. Jacob in handling the case. Jacob highlighted Hill’s commitment to advancing the conversation on police reform, stating,

“Tyreek intends to continue the national movement for necessary police reform that George Floyd’s death started.”

Final Thoughts

Tyreek Hill is doing everything right to get the officers involved in his situation held accountable. If this is how police officers treat star NFL wide receivers, imagine how many other unfamous black men get brutalized by law enforcement. It is shameful to think about. Unfortunately, in this situation, Tyreek Hill wasn’t seen as a five-time First-team All-Pro player, he was seen as just another black man who recorded a simple traffic violation, and the punishment did not fit the crime.

Obtaining the most well-versed lawyers in this specific subject will prove to pay dividends in a potential litigation room. Danny Tores should never hold a badge and gun ever again. With his troubling history, it is shocking how he still has a job.  Tyreek Hill is making the right moves to ensure that happens.
