Tyler Herro won the 2025 NBA Three-Point Contest. One of the best events of All-Star weekend did not disappoint this season. Herro won the three-point contest, defeating Buddy Hield and Darius Garland in the final round. He scored 19 points in the first round, which was just enough to advance to the finals. Then, after a dramatic finish, Herro outshot Garland and Hield to win the contest. Tyler Herro made his first All-Star game this season, and this was a great way for him to kickstart the weekend of festivities.
A Close First Round
The Brooklyn Nets‘ Cam Johnson kicked off the event. He has been one of the bright spots on a struggling Nets team but got off to a slow start in the three-point contest. He finished with 14 points. Garland was up next. He has had a great season, earning an All-Star bid for the Cleveland Cavaliers. It did not take him long to pass Johnson’s score, making four out of five shots on multiple racks. He scored 24 points, making six money ball shots for one of the best performances of the first round.
Cade Cunningham and Norman Powell had cold performances. Cunningham got hot on the money ball rack but only earned 16 points. Powell is in the midst of a breakout year with the Los Angeles Clippers, shooting 43% from three. This was not his night though. He tied Johnson with 14 points. Tyler Herro was the fifth contestant up. He had a slow start to the contest but rebounded with a hot final stretch. He finished with 19 points. Jalen Brunson started hot, making four shots on his first rack. He went cold after that, so despite a strong start, he scored 18 points. This was one point behind Herro, and Brunson did not advance.
Hield had a great first round. He won the three-point contest in 2020 and looked poised to win again. He made both Starry balls and took the lead before he reached the final rack. Hield blew away the field, finishing with 31 points. The last shooter was the back-to-back contest winner, Damian Lillard. Lillard needed 20 points to advance. Going into the final two racks, he had 10 points but only made two money balls on the final rack. This ended Lillard’s hopes of a three-peat. Hield, Garland, and Herro advanced to the final round.
Tyler Herro Wins
In the final round of the contest, the top three contestants had the chance to go again. Tyler Herro got things started, knocking down both Starry ball shots. He passed his first-round total on the final money ball rack and finished with 24 points. Garland followed Herro but struggled at the start. After only making four shots in the first two racks, he had ground to make up but did not heat up. Garland finished the final round with 19 points, which was not enough to beat Tyler Herro.
Hield went last, and after his scorching first round, missed every shot on the first rack. This put him in a hole, and it all came down to the final rack. With five money ball shots, Hield had to make all of them to surpass Herro’s score. He made four out of five. This made him finish one point shy with 23 points. Tyler Herro was crowned the winner of the 2025 NBA three-point contest.
