Tyler Bass: Buffalo Bills Add Insurance Option For Struggling Kicker

Tyler Bass is on thin ice in Buffalo.

Tyler Bass and Scott Norwood are two kickers remembered in Buffalo Bills history for one thing: wide right. The Buffalo Bills have added a kicker to their practice squad after the recent struggles from their high-paid kicker Tyler Bass. The Bills, who play on Sunday in Orchard Park, New York, against the Tennessee Titans, have added Kicker Lucas Havrisik to their practice squad and released WR Ahmarean Brown from the practice squad.

The question that many in the “Bills Mafia” are wondering is whether or not the Buffalo Bills have a kicking problem. Kicker Tyler Bass has had an up-and-down season so far, and there’s concern after his recent struggles. Could Bass be kicking his way out of Buffalo?

Buffalo Adds Competition To Kicking Position

The Bills announced that they have signed former Los Angeles Rams Kicker Lucas Havrisik to their practice squad. Last season with the Rams, Havrisik connected on 15 out of 20 field goal attempts. Havrisik was an undrafted free agent out of Arizona. He spent time on the practice squads of the Cleveland Browns and Indianapolis Colts.

The arrival of Harvisik could spell the end of Tyler Bass in Buffalo. While Tyler Bass’ job is safe for another week, the Bills will be at home versus the Tennessee Titans in Orchard Park, New York. In college, he made 34 out of 53 kicks. While the numbers aren’t the greatest, his career length is 52 yards. That may be a little tricky with the swirling winds coming off of Lake Erie.

Bass Addresses Bills Adding Kicker

Tyler Bass will be the first to admit that his recent results need to be better. In an interview, the former Georgia Southern Kicker stated, “After tough games like Monday night, man, you come in here and you gotta be fully accountable. You’ve got to be honest with yourself, talk to your coaches, figure out the issue, and move forward. But once you come in on Tuesday, since we played Monday, you watch the tape and then you flush it, and then you figure out a plan. Keep it simple this week and focus on that to the best of your abilities.”

On Monday night in an away game versus the New York Jets in East Rutherford, New Jersey Bass missed a kick that looked like it was tipped by DT Quinnen Williams. He has made nine of his twelve field goal attempts (75%) this season. He has missed a field goal in half of the games the Bills have played this season. Going back to last season, he missed a key game-tying 44-yard field goal against the Kansas City Chiefs in a home divisional round game. Could week 7 be his last in Buffalo?

Final Thoughts

Tyler Bass has been an important piece for the Buffalo Bills in their quest to win their first Super Bowl in franchise history. While he has been up and down throughout the last two seasons, sometimes players go through struggles such as the jitters. Tyler Bass needs to regain his confidence and swing. Bass’ leg is significant in Buffalo because of the conditions that the team plays in during the winter. However, he needs to get better. He is the perfect example of a player who takes accountability and understands the conditions. Will he prove his doubters wrong?
