The journey to BKSP grounds in Savar turned into a nightmare for all four teams, trapped in traffic for hours.
A major accident on the Dhaka-Aricha highway led to the postponement of two Dhaka Premier League matches at the BKSP grounds in Savar. Tournament officials reported that the teams got stuck in traffic for hours due to the unfortunate incident.
As a result of the delay, both matches have been rescheduled for Wednesday, causing a ripple effect on the fixtures. Matches originally set for Wednesday will now take place on Thursday.
Hopefully, the affected matches were between Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club and Legends of Rupganj at BKSP-3 ground and between Prime Bank Cricket Club and Partex Sporting Club at BKSP-4 ground, with a scheduled start time of 9 am local time.
Dhaka-Aricha Highway Oil Tanker Fire Accident
The morning took a tragic turn when a tanker carrying oil overturned and burst into flames, claiming two lives and injuring eight others.
The accident led to a chaotic scene as the blazing fire engulfed vehicles, halting traffic on the busy highway. Emergency services rushed to the site. But the four participating teams found themselves stranded amidst the chaos, unable to reach the Savar venues. A report from the local daily quoted by ESPNcriinfo detailed the gridlock situation.
The accident caused a disruption in transport movement on the highway, resulting in long queues of vehicles, as confirmed by our correspondent.
Given the 9:00 am local time start for the matches, tournament officials had no option but to push the games to the next day. This causes a shake-up in the tightly packed Dhaka Premier League schedule.
Ali Hossain, member secretary of CCDM, explained, “The teams could not go to the venue due to the accident. That’s why the matches have been postponed and shifted to tomorrow. The matches originally scheduled for tomorrow have been bodily shifted,”
Meanwhile, the match between Abahani and Mohammedan in Fatullah proceeded as scheduled.
This incident is not the first time that heavy traffic has disrupted Dhaka Premier League matches. Prime Bank captain Tamim Iqbal recently experienced delays, arriving at a match venue two hours after the game began due to traffic congestion.
