Twins by the Numbers in 2024

Twins

Last week, I chronicled the Minnesota Twins and their hitting woes. Since that time, the situation has decayed further, and it demands a deeper look into the truly horrific numbers that the Twins have produced this year. Word to the faint of heart. This portrait isn’t pretty.

Twins and Their Offensive Stats

Double entendre I know, but I thought it was cute.

7-13

The all-important number. The Twins’ won-loss record.

8

The number of games the Twins are behind the division-leading Cleveland Guardians. The Guardians are playing excellent baseball but eight and a half out after 20 games. C’mon.

61

The number of runs the Twins have driven in so far this season. This ranks them 29th in all of baseball in this category. Thank God for those lowly Chicago White Sox.

.195

Team batting average so far this year. They would be dead last in this category if not for those bottom-dwelling Chicago Southsiders.

Truly Embarrassing Statistics

.135

The Twins batting average with runners in scoring position.

42

Runs batted in with runners in scoring position. By comparison, the Arizona Diamondbacks rank first in this category. Their total: 100.

Twins on the Injured List

3

The number of key position players on the injured list. Royce Lewis was injured in Game 1. Max Kepler went down in Game 6. And Carlos Correa’s recovery time is being extended as a precaution. As for replacements. Brooks Lee would have been an automatic call-up with the whole left side of the infield out of commission. But he has been sidelined all season with serious back issues.

Kepler was rehabbing at Triple-A St. Paul, and he was recalled to the big club today. But Lewis and Correa are both at least a month out from a possible return. And Lee has been diagnosed with a herniated disk that has him out indefinitely.

Who’s Left?

So who is left on the Twin’s roster who might be able to pick up some of the slack?

0

Home runs that Byron Buxton has hit so far this year.

2

Carlos Santana’s 2024 RBI total.

.179

Eddy Julien’s year-to-date batting average.

And More Pain Exists

The Twins were forced to send last year’s phenom, Matt Wallner back down to Triple-A. He departed having hit one home run, coupled with four RBIs and a 0.80 batting average. The team desperately needs to have him regain his swagger so that he can return to help them win a division title.

Pitching Woes

And their starting pitching has faltered at times this year.

9.18

Louis Varlands’s ERA to date, He was just sent down to St. Paul to regain his form.

2.07

Chris Paddack’s WHIP after three starts.

2

The number of innings that Michael Tonkin lasted in his spot start. The Twins have since released him and he has returned to the New York Mets.

The Minnesota Twins still have time to right their 2024 ship. They are struggling right now, but the sample size is small. They will need folks like Buxton, Kepler, and Julien to step up while Correa and Lewis are absent. And they must find some stability in the backend of the rotation. Maybe Simeon Woods Richardson is part of the answer. He was very effective in a previous stint with the team.
