It was an in-season Saturday night preseason game; excited by Trey Lance’s performance as he led the Dallas Cowboys to a 27-12 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. For third-string quarterback Trey Lance, this game gave him everything he needed to keep scrambling for a roster spot with the Cowboys.
Trey Lance Shines Under Spotlight
The former No. 3 overall draft pick seized the opportunity. He went 15 of 23 passing for 151 yards and added a rushing touchdown. Lance played the final three-quarters of the game, filling in as the team’s quarterback while starter Dak Prescott watched from the sidelines. Cooper Rush, who started the game for the Dallas Cowboys, completed just 1 of 3 passes for 6 yards in the first quarter.
One of the dramatic moments in the first half came when Dallas kicker Brandon Aubrey nailed a 66-yard field goal. Had this been part of the regular season, this kick would have tied the NFL record for the longest field goal. Aubrey’s long-range effort made it 13-6 at halftime to the Cowboys and set up the second half.
Raiders Quarterback Battle Continues
However, the battle for the Raiders’ starting quarterback is not yet settled. Aidan O’Connell, in contention for the spot, was outperformed by Lance. O’Connell had a good opening but was blemished by a critical error—a 69-yard interception return for a touchdown by Cowboys cornerback Kemon Hall on the first play of the fourth quarter. He ended with 14 of 20 passes for 96 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.
Another player in contention for the Raiders’ starting spot, Gardner Minshew, did not have an easy day either. Although he had most of the Raiders’ talent on offense available, he still could not make any difference. He completed 10 out of 21 passes for 95 yards, which was quite inaccurate. He overthrew several open targets, and during his time on the pitch, the Raiders managed only one field goal.
Lance’s Impactful Drives
Conversely, Lance engineered two quality possessions in the second quarter, accounting for 10 points against six Raiders defensive starters. Most impressive was his 20-yard scramble, which set up Aubrey’s long field goal. It was quite visible that he worked under pressure, engineering effective drives and managing the game quite well.
He put the game away in the fourth quarter. With over two minutes remaining, his 2-yard touchdown run gave the Dallas Cowboys a 15-point lead. That was the clinching play to secure this win and solidify Lance as a difference-maker in this game.
Conclusion
Trey Lance made a statement tonight that proved him worthy of being the Cowboys’ quarterback. On the field, his leadership and ability to score critical touchdowns proved why he had been considered indispensable to the team’s long-term plans.
The Raiders’ quarterback situation remained as foggy as it had been before the game, as neither O’Connell nor Minshew did or said anything to nail down the starting position. Of course, that means the microscope will continue to be trained on these quarterbacks throughout the preseason, making the coming games even more pivotal for their careers.
