Trent Williams Will Return to the 49ers “Shortly”

The San Francisco 49ers’ tumultuous offseason rages on as the team hopes to sign star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and future Hall of Fame left tackle Trent Williams to hefty contract extension.

While Brandon Aiyuk remains a daily, hot-button topic amidst his current hold-in, Trent Williams has flown under the radar. He has been like a ghost, haunting Kyle Shanahan’s dreams by showing premonitions of a future where Jaylon Moore is blocking quarterback Brock Purdy’s blindside in Week 1 vs. the New York Jets.

Thankfully, the nightmare may not last long enough to become a reality.

According to former NFL receiver and current Fox Sports One analyst DeSean Jackson, the 49ers and Trent Williams are working on a deal to bring the All-Pro left tackle back before Week 1 of the regular season.

“They are working on something. I think they are going to make it right for my boy to come in there. He might be showing up a little late.” Jackson continued, “He has got some fines and fees he may have to take care of, but he is going to be there. 49ers fans, it is going to be alright. He will be there shortly.”

In Williams Absence:

The 49ers have a 3-6 record without Trent Williams since 2020, including an 0-3 stint last season. His importance to the offense cannot be understated. When Williams plays, the Niners win, and when he does not, San Francisco has to suffer watching Jaylon Moore attempt to fill his shoes.

While Moore should never be expected to replace Williams, the Preseason has shown Moore struggles to maintain an average level of play. Last Sunday vs. the Saints, Moore allowed three pressures in 30-pass blocking opportunities. Williams allowed just 18 pressures and a 4.4 percent pressure rate last season. He also was not responsible for a single sack in 413 pass-blocking snaps.

Contract Projection:

Trent Williams’ current six-year, 138.06 million dollar contract is the largest deal signed by a left tackle in NFL history. So, what exactly does Williams want?

If he were Tom Cruise in “Jerry Maguire,” he would not say, “Show me the money.” Williams would be in his mansion, likely shirtless, showing off his gigantic Silverback tattoo that cascades across his shoulders, exclaiming, “Show me the guarantees.”

Williams currently ranks fifth in total guarantees (45.1 million dollars) and fully guarantees (40.05 million dollars). His play would dictate a sizable raise, putting him near the top of both lists. Yes, Williams is 36 years old and has hinted at retirement in previous seasons, a decision the 49ers are dreading. But signing Williams to a new contract might guarantee them breathing room before he inevitably walks away.

Williams knows the 49ers need him if they want to win a Super Bowl. He is not tackle number two on the depth chart, nor is he not tackle number two in the entire league. His age may drop his price under Vikings’ tackle Christian Darrisaw’s 77.5 million dollars total guarantees, but he will likely inch closer to a seven with six zeroes following it.
