Australian cricket star Travis Head has elected not to rest following the T20 World Cup. Why? Well, he’s got a solid reason. Travis is set to team up with compatriot Steve Smith at the Washington Freedom for the upcoming edition of Major League Cricket (MLC) in 2024.
With Australia’s international schedule featuring a hiatus until September’s white-ball tour of England, Head seized the opportunity to participate in MLC.
Currently representing Sunrisers Hyderabad in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Travis has showcased his prowess in four matches, accumulating 133 runs at an impressive average of 33.25 and a striking rate of 172.73.
Travis’s Decision and Freedom’s Line-Up
Head, who is currently playing in the IPL with Sunrisers Hyderabad, was fatigued at the end of the Australian summer having required a rest during the home white-ball series against West Indies in February before another four months of non-stop cricket which included the tour of New Zealand, the IPL and the T20 World Cup.
Travis Head has chosen to continue his 2024 playing odyssey by signing with Freedom, just a week after Smith joined the franchise. Australia does not have any international commitments after the T20 World Cup until a white-ball tour of England in September.
Notable Signings and Exciting Season Ahead
With no immediate international commitments until September, Head’s move to join Washington Freedom seems strategic, allowing him to showcase his skills in a different format of the game.
The addition of former captain Ricky Ponting as the head coach adds experience and expertise to the team, replacing Greg Shipperd.
In addition to Travis and Smith, New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra will also be part of the Washington Freedom roster for the upcoming season. The team has retained foreign players like Marco Jansen and Akeal Hosein from the previous year, ensuring a well-rounded squad for MLC 2024.
Australia’s presence in the league has further strengthened with notable signings including Adam Zampa with Los Angeles Knight Riders, Spencer Johnson with Knight Riders, and Tim David with MI New York.
The influx of Australian talent hints at an exciting season ahead, with more players expected to join the MLC roster in the coming weeks.
