Instantly Tough Decision: PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi on Babar Azam’s Future and Team Overhaul

Speaking on Thursday, Mohsin Naqvi, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), said that the decision on whether Babar Azam will continue to stay as the white-ball captain will be made by retired players. Mohsin Naqvi placed particular stress on seeking advice from experienced players to arrive at a correct decision about the leadership position.

Still, he did not explain in detail who among the former players would be involved in this decision-making process, and this made the cricket community eager and curious about the individuals involved. The Pakistan cricket team was enriched by the presence and performance of Babar Azam as a player, and now the talks are moving to his promotion as captain of the team.

This decision to have former cricketers shows the board’s willingness to incorporate professionals to help assist the national team in the future.

But there is no such decision as yet regarding Babar Azam,” Mohsin Naqvi, who also holds the portfolio of interior minister of Pakistan, said while briefing the newsmen in Lahore. He, however, stressed that he is communicating with only those former cricketers who have an interest in Pakistani cricket at heart.

Mohsin Naqvi disclosed that one of the former cricketers has already presented a full report about the drawbacks of Pakistan cricket, but in detail, the name of the former cricketer was not disclosed. This follows Pakistan’s poor performance in the just concluded T20 World Cup 2024, where the team did not qualify for the Super 8 stage after being thumped by India and the United States.

Caution Against Hasty Decisions

When asked about the change that he had once advocated for a complete managerial change in Pakistan cricket, Mohsin Naqvi, being a little diplomatic, advised a careful change. “And people are pondering about surgery, but one should never make any decision while you are angry,” he said, “because hasty decisions can be dangerous most of the time. ”

About the decision of the selection committee, Mohsin Naqvi did not have a good word for it, expressing that the committee made a terrible decision.

“Those involved in the selection committee who made wrong decisions will also stand to be punished.”.” he stated. This therefore entails a complete overhauling in the formulation of the committee depending on the results that were educated in the research study.

Mohsin Naqvi Brief Discussions with the Coaching Staff

The PCB chief has summoned head coach Gary Kirsten and the assistant coach Azhar Mahmood to explain the team’s performance. “Kirsten, Karthik, and the rest have also filled a comprehensive report on Pakistan’s performance in the t20 World Cup,” Mohsin Naqvi added.

Mohsin Naqvi also conceded that he is also studying the aspects of ‘grouping and politics’ in the Pakistan cricket team. This implies a need to look into relative internal structures and specifics that may be having an impact on the performance of the team in question.

Angrily emphasizing domestic cricket, Mohsin Naqvi said the players will only be selected based on their performances in domestic versions of the sport. This is meant to work towards the direction of only picking and promoting the best players in the international teams.

Everything that Naqvi said and implied about the Pakistani cricket team suggests that the sport in the country is about to enter at least a couple of years of intense self-analysis and probably change regarding responsibility, efficiency, and thinking.
