Tottenham Hotspur were comfortably ahead with a two-goal advantage at the break thanks to strikes from Brennan Johnson and James Maddison but found themselves on the losing end of a dramatic 3-2 defeat at the Amex Stadium. Brighton burst onto the scene in the second half with a fierce determination that left Spurs reeling. They capitalized on the complacency of the Lilywhites, delivering an unbelievable three-goal barrage in just 20 minutes after the break.
Defensive Frailty Cost Tottenham
Heading to the Amex Stadium is always tough, and Brighton hasn’t lost at home this season, so Spurs faced a real challenge ahead. But, Tottenham appeared to have it easy in the first half, controlling the majority of the ball and having the better opportunities to score. Brennan Johnson and James Maddison converted two of those opportunities to put Tottenham solidly in control at the half.
The match turned around completely in the second half, as Brighton came out strong and hit Tottenham with three quick goals in just 20 minutes after the break. Yankuba Minteh, Georginio Rutter, and Danny Welbeck all found the net to put Brighton in control. Tottenham’s defense, especially Destiny Udogie, seemed off their game and will definitely feel some blame for the outcome.
Ange Postecoglou Unhappy With Defeat
Spurs head coach Postecoglou was willing to accept responsibility for the outcome when he spoke with the media following the game. He did, however, make it clear that Tottenham deserved to lose against Brighton as his side took their foot off the gas. Postecoglou said:
“Fair to say that the second half was unacceptable and we paid a price for that. We probably should have put it to bed in the first half. What we did in that second half is unacceptable and we got what we deserved.
“Maybe we just thought we’d roll out there and play well again, and that’s not how it works, and we paid for it. We’ve conceded before, but it is how you react, and our reaction wasn’t what it should be. It’s a bad day for us, and when it’s a bad day, the responsibility falls at my feet.”
Spurs boss also explained what went down in the dressing room after the final whistle. He said:
“Feedback is always what I believe in. I’m sure the players are disappointed. I don’t care. They should be. I’m disappointed, the fans are disappointed. They need to know that you can lose a game of football, but the disappointment comes from not doing the basics you need to play at this level.”
Conclusion
Tottenham heads into the international break with another disappointing result, and it seems Postecoglou will have plenty to think about. After the tough loss, Postecoglou was asked about what he wanted to say to the Spurs players. He replied:
“There is no message. It is a terrible loss for us – as bad as it gets. Only one way to fix it and that’s my responsibility.
Tottenham Hotspur will face West Ham after the international break. It is interesting to see the outcome of this fixture, as both teams have had disappointing results this season.
