Tottenham are hoping to increase their lowest position in the Premier League compared to last year when they finished outside of the coveted top-five spots. They had an exciting summer transfer window, where they made numerous deals, brought in great players, and sold some players who weren’t pulling their weight.
But nobody saw this shock transfer move coming. Even the gaffer is surprised that this player is leaving the club, basically leaving the London outfit high and dry with no one to fill his position with such little time left in the transfer window.
Tottenham Player Decides to Depart Club
One of Tottenham’s most important players, Sergio Reguilon, has decided to leave the club this summer. Reguilon is a surprising departure, as he is a player who has gotten consistent minutes and has featured heavily in the last season. But, at 27 years old, he knows that he still has some time left in his career, so he can move elsewhere to secure more playing time.
However, his consistent minutes last year wasn’t at Tottenham — it was at Manchester United. He was sent out on loan before the season started and found himself at the Red Devils, the struggling United club that had virtually no defenders for the entirety of the season, to struggle along. We bet that he wanted to head back to London to his home club for the whole season, as United seemed as if the morale was low due to poor performance and players having to be out of position.
It seemed as if this was the year he would return to London and get his spot back in the defensive line. However, he doesn’t seem to feature in any of the plans moving forward for the Spurs, leading him to look elsewhere for the 2024-2025 Premier League season. But, one option isn’t a club in the Premier League — it is one in La Liga in Spain.
Rumors have it that Barcelona FC is in contention to sign the defender for the upcoming season. We are a bit surprised that Barca would go for the Spaniard — not that he isn’t a good defender, but he doesn’t seem to be the ‘level’ that Barcelona would have gone for in years past. But, Barcelona could be struggling financially and needing to fill a gap, and Sergio could be just the man.
He can play in full-back and center-back, making him a versatile player who can slot in wherever necessary. Tottenham could miss his versatility moving forward.
Sergio Reguilon Career
Sergio Reguilon is a 27-year-old player from Madrid who could be heading back to his home country if he signs for Barcelona before the start of the season. He began his career at Real Madrid Becerril and moved to EFM Villalba in 2003. Then, he moved to Real Madrid and stayed put for more than 15 years, working his way through the youth system.
As he broke into the senior team, he made 48 appearances for the Real Madrid Castilla team and simultaneously had successful loan spells at Logrones for two seasons. In 2019, he played for Sevilla on loan, where he made 31 appearances. Tottenham noticed his prowess in La Liga and signed him in 2020, where he has gone on to make 52 appearances.
His time at Tottenham has been characterized by intermittent loan spells, such as 11 appearances for Atletico Madrid in 2022, nine appearances for United in 2023, and 16 appearances for Brentford in 2024. Now, it looks as though he could be headed back to Spain, leaving Tottenham without a versatile defender for the upcoming campaign.
