Tottenham Star Makes Surprising Move to Ligue 1 Marseille

Sheffield United vs Tottenham Hotspur

One of Tottenham’s brightest stars who has been around the club for a long time is on the move yet again to another club — and one not even in the Premier League. Their key midfielder is currently on his way to Ligue 1 in France to continue his playing career and score a lucrative transfer deal that will see him play out the rest of his career days on a hefty salary.

So, who is going and why? Marseille has captured one of Tottenham’s best playmakers, so we know that Spurs are going to be without one of their engines in the middle of the park for the 2024-2025 season. What will they do now to recoup and recover before the season begins?

Tottenham midfielder Hojbjerg is officially on his way to Marseille in Ligue 1. There has been lots of talk about where Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg might go for a loan from the Spurs, but it seems the question has finally been answered with Marseille agreeing to pay his loan fees to come to the French side this season. Hojbjerg heads to France to play for Marseille with the option to purchase next summer. He goes there for a little over $14 million for the one-time transfer fee, with other news outlets suggesting the fee was as high as $22 million for the midfielder.

This proves to be a smart move for Marseille, a team that finished in eighth place last year in Ligue 1. They earned only 50 points in 34 games but lost out on the top four spots by only three wins. The battle between the top and the bottom was close last season in Ligue 1, with Marseille just seven points above the 11th-placed team. They scored 52 goals on the season and let in 41, showing that they need to score more goals on offense and less on defense. Their goal differential of +11 isn’t terrible, but a creative midfielder who can set up scoring opportunities is much needed for their team.

If Hojbjerg comes in and plays well with other midfielders, like Kone, Rongier, and Harit, he could easily slot into the starting lineup. Plus, if he feeds passes to Moumbagna, Henrique, and Aubameyang, they will improve on their right-place finish from last season.

Hojbjerg is a 28-year-old midfielder who seems to be a veteran in the game, although he is still not even 30 years old. He began his youth career with BK Skjold and KB in Denmark, eventually moving to Brondby in 2009 at the age of 14 to progress his technical and tactical abilities.  He signed with Bayern Munich II in 2012, at just 17 years old, where he made 44 appearances and scored twelve goals. He impressed so much that he joined Bayern Munich’s senior team in 2023, where he made 17 appearances, and went on to have successful loan spells at FC Augsburg and Schalke 04 during his time with the German Bundesliga club.

Due to his successful loan spells, he caught the eye of the English Premier League clubs. Southampton signed him in 2016, where he went on to make 109 appearances in four seasons. Tottenham Hotspurs then saw his longevity and work rate in the middle and decided to sign him in 2020. Since signing for Tottenham, he has made nearly 150 appearances for the London club.

Now he looks to leave Tottenham and go to Marseille to see how he can fare in the French league. If he plays anything like he has during his last few seasons at Spurs, he will fit in just fine.
