Tottenham Set To Sign German Forward On New 1-Year Loan Deal

Tottenham had a fair season this past year in the Premier League, but still not quite reaching the heights they had hoped for. Tottenham have rarely contended for the top three spots in the EPL or fought to win the coveted trophy, but that doesn’t mean they don’t play exciting football, bring in talented players, and develop their squad members to succeed in tough environments.

One of their key players was in the German Bundesliga – and playing extremely well. Many thought the club would send him back after this past season, but it seems as though the player, and the club, both agreed upon extending the loan deal to let the player further develop, enjoy his playing, and help Tottenham succeed in the EPL.

Attacker’s Loan Spell at Tottenham Extended

Tottenham Hotspurs have decided to extend Timo Werner‘s loan spell from RB Leipzig, including a deal to make the transfer permanent for less than $11 million – a steal for a player of his caliber. Although he is of German descent and probably loves playing in his home country’s domestic league, he is no stranger to the Premier League.

Werner played for Chelsea a few seasons ago, but didn’t have the best spell – he didn’t score very many goals and his price tag was questioned. He returned to the Bundesliga to get his confidence back and begin scoring goals again – and that he did. Now, he has returned to the EPL via Tottenham and showed the English club that he can make a difference.

Tottenham brought the attacker to London at the beginning of 2024 for the entirety of the season, but the club is so pleased with his performance that they have decided to extend the loan spell. Despite an unfortunate hamstring injury in April, the club has put their faith and trust in the attacker to come back fit and strong for the 2024-2025 season.

Tottenham Manager Keen to Keep Werner

The Tottenham manager, Postecoglou, sees potential and talent in Werner, despite netting just two goals during his time in London.

‘I’m talking about where I want us to be in the next six months to be in a better place than today. Timo we signed until the end of the season on loan and he’s part of the strategy to see what we need to do in the summer and can we do it. Are there going to be other gaps and where does Timo fit in with that strategy? So we have a plan in place….I think he’s been very good for us. He came in at a really important time…his coming in was very helpful for us and I think he’s made an impact….I still need some clarity about what we’ve got here first.’

That isn’t too much of a vote of confidence from the manager, but it seems like Werner can be used as a utility player when Tottenham’s key strikers, like Son or Richarlison, are injured or away on international duty.

Hopefully, Werner can get back to his best this season for Tottenham. He has been short on goals at his time in Chelsea, scoring 23 goals in 89 appearances, netting only twice in the Bundesliga, and scoring just twice for Tottenham. Maybe the 2024-2025 season will be different.
