Toronto Blue Jays-Yimi Garcia Agree To 2-Year Contract

Toronto Blue Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays agreed to a 2-year $15 million contract with Relief Pitcher Yimi Garcia earlier today. He was acquired by the Seattle Mariners from the Toronto Blue Jays in July before the MLB Trade Deadline. After a slight detour with the Mariners, Garcia is returning to a team where he has spent parts of the last three seasons.

He had a stellar 2024 season as he finished 3-0 with a 3.46 ERA. Garcia’s career has included stints with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Miami Marlins, Houston Astros, Toronto Blue Jays, and Seattle Mariners. He has a career 22-29 record with a 3.59 ERA. How will Garcia fare this year with the Toronto Blue Jays?

What Will Garcia Bring To the Toronto Blue Jays?

Toronto finished the regular season 74-88 and missed the MLB Playoffs after qualifying the past two seasons. One of the reasons why the Toronto Blue Jays had such a disappointing 2024 season was their poor pitching staff. They were 22nd in ERA, 19th in opposing batting average, and 20th in WHIP. Toronto’s bullpen, an area Garcia will hope to help improve, was even worse this past season. They had the league’s second-worst bullpen ERA and struggled to close out games in 2024.

Final Thoughts

The Toronto Blue Jays were reportedly involved in the Juan Soto sweepstakes until the bitter end. The team will be led by First Baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. heading into the 2025 season as the sides try to hammer out a contract extension during the offseason. He was second in the league in batting average and sixth in OPS during a regular season. Toronto will look to continue improving their roster as they look to return to the playoffs next season.
