Toronto Blue Jays Star Pitcher Parlays Spectacular 2024 Start Into League-Wide Recognition

Toronto Blue Jays Starting Pitcher named AL Pitcher of the Month.

Toronto Blue Jays Starting Pitcher was named the American League’s Pitcher of the Month for March/April. This is the first time that Berrios has won this prestigious award. He is 4-2 on the season with an ERA of 1.44. His 1.44 ERA is third-best in all of Major League Baseball through the first month of play. Berrios made six stars in April and he surrendered no earned runs in three of them.

Berrios has earned this award not by being a strikeout maven, but by having the opposition put the ball in play and getting timely outs. He is going through a bit of a rough stretch as of late losing two straight decisions, both of which were against the Kansas City Royals. The Toronto Blue Jays are 5-2 in the seven games where Berrios has toed the slab this season.

Will Berrios be able to keep up his strong start for the rest of the MLB season?

Jose Berrios Career Summary

Berrios made his MLB debut in 2016 as a member of the Minnesota Twins. He was traded from the Twins to the Toronto Blue Jays at the 2021 MLB Trade Deadline. He is a two-time All-Star (2018, 2019) and won a Gold Glove in 2023. The Toronto Blue Jays ace also finished ninth in the American League CY Young voting in 2021.

Berrios has a career record of 87-68 with an ERA of 4.05.

The Toronto Blue Jays (15-17) entered the 2024 season with lofty expectations, but have struggled to begin the season. They are fourth in the American League East and have lost seven of their last nine games at the time of publication. Toronto Blue Jays Manager John Schneider is well aware that his ballclub is underachieving early in the 2024 season.

“We’re not anywhere near where we can be… We know we need to be better. We will be better… When it does click, I think you’re gonna see a complete brand of baseball. Right now it hasn’t worked consistently. But again, it will be better,” Schneider said.

Where Does Toronto Go From Here?

The Toronto Blue Jays offense, expected to be a strength of the team heading into the season, has massively underperformed thus far. They are 26th in runs scored are bottom 10 in both batting average and home runs. Key players like Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Bo Bichette, and George Springer have yet to find their footing this season.
Toronto’s pitching staff, outside of Berrios, has struggled as well this season. They are near the bottom in team ERA and have surrendered the second-most home runs in all of Major League Baseball.
The Toronto Blue Jays need to start playing up to their potential this season, or the strong start of Berrios will be wasted and the team will be left with much more questions than answers.
