Top West Indies Players to Keep an Eye Out For in the T20 World Cup

West Indies

The T20 World Cup is not just another tournament for the West Indies. It’s a chance for Coach Darren Sammy to defy the odds and bring home another victory. Curtly Ambrose thinks that the Caribbean team will do it. The last time the West Indies lifted the trophy was under Sammy’s leadership, and now, as the team goes through a transition period, the stakes are high. These top West Indies players are the ones to watch, adding to the anticipation and excitement of the T20 World Cup.

Shamar Joseph

Even though this youngster hasn’t played a limited-overs game for the West Indies yet, he’s already shown his promise as a cricketer. He played a pivotal role in the West Indies tour of Australia earlier this year, and the 24-year-old bowler was fast-tracked on the team as a result.

Despite his performance, the Guyanese bowler doesn’t have much limited-overs experience. He’s only managed three T20 matches and two fifty-over games. It may take the youngster some time to adapt to the faster pace of the limited-overs game. The team has great hopes for this one.

Shimron Hetmyer

The West Indies have long lacked another power hitter like Chris Gayle or Keiron Pollard. This Guyana-based batsman might be just what the team needs to compete with juggernauts like India and Sri Lanka. With an overall T20 strike rate of 135, Shimron Hetmyer is not someone any bowler should take lightly.

He missed his first opportunity to play for the West Indies T20 Squad in the 2022 World Cup, but he’ll get his chance to shine in this tournament. His performances for the Rajasthan Royals show he has what it takes to make a massive difference in any game he participates in.

Nicholas Pooran

Another of the West Indies power hitters is Nicholas Pooran. He concluded his 2024 IPL season with an impressive strike rate of 178.21, making him a tactical necessity for a team that wants to get off the blocks as fast as possible and stay in front for the whole game.

Pooran is not a newcomer to T20 cricket, with over 300 games under his belt in various competitions around the globe. He hails from Trinidad and Tobago, and while he might not have the same style and panache as Brian Lara, he certainly has the hunger for victory. It’s a hunger that will come in handy as the West Indies take the field for the T20 World Cup.

These three players are among the top West Indies players to watch in this T20 World Cup competition, but it would be an understatement to say these are the only stars. While the team doesn’t have as much experience as other teams in the competition, it makes up for that lack of expertise with a pedigree that spans decades. Is it possible for Sammy to pull off another miracle as coach this time? Whatever happens, the Caribbean region will be supporting its hometown heroes to the finish.
