The NFL Draft is nearly here, where the top college football prospects will get the chance to hear their names called and live out their dreams of being an NFL player. As draft day approaches, teams will start to do their due diligence on the available prospects to ensure that they pick the player who is the best possible fit for their organization. Quarterback, the most important position in football, will be a position to watch as some big time names will enter the draft this year.
While there are many talented quarterbacks in the draft this season, there are a select few that are considered more highly-touted than others, with the top names expected to be first round draft choices. So without further ado, let’s take a look at the top three ranked quarterbacks ahead of the 2025 draft.
Cam Ward, Miami
Ward may very well have cemented himself as the No. 1 overall pick with the season that he had for the Hurricanes in 2024. In his lone season with Miami after transferring from Washington State, Ward started all 13 games and led the Hurricanes to a 10-3 record, coming up just short of winning the Pop Tarts Bowl after losing 42-41 to Iowa State.
Ward’s season was one to remember as he threw for 4,313 yards, 39 touchdowns and 7 interceptions while completing over 67% of his passes, all career highs. He finished fourth in the Heisman voting as well. The Tennessee Titans hold the first pick and while they have been linked to players such as Cornerback Will Johnson from Michigan, they do need a quarterback with Ward being an option.
Shedeur Sanders, Colorado
Sanders is an interesting case. Related to NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders it can be hard for sons of superstars to match the hype that their parents had for themselves. But Shedeur proved all throughout his college career, particularly over these past two seasons at Colorado, that he can be the focal point of a team. Guiding the Buffaloes to a 9-4 record in 2024, their best season since 2016, Sanders threw for 4,134 yards for 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, completing a career high of 74% of his passes.
Under the guidance of his father and head coach Deion, Sanders became one of the best quarterbacks in college football and could prove to be a difference maker in the pros. Multiple teams could be in the market for a quarterback after the Titans, namely the Cleveland Browns, Las Vegas Raiders, New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Jaxson Dart, Ole Miss
At one point, many considered Jalen Milroe of Alabama to be the third best quarterback in this draft. But after Dart put together a dominant combine, he started to climb up on draft boards. Some analysts even declared that he is a first-round talent.
In his final season with the Rebels, Dart started all 13 games and guided the team to a 10-3 record completing 69.3% of his passes for 4,279 yards, 29 touchdowns and 6 interceptions while helping the Rebels take home a victory in the Gator Bowl by beating Duke 52-20. Dart is one of the more dynamic quarterbacks in this class, possessing a good running ability as well, and could find himself in a position to be a team’s franchise quarterback.
Final Thoughts
This year’s draft will certainly be interesting. Many big name prospects will feature in the draft this season but the quarterback position could very well be the most intriguing. Any of these three guys could even be in the mix to be the first player taken. All of them are for sure capable of being special players in the league. Only time will tell if any of these guys are able to pan out.
