The UFC gathered much popularity for one reason and one reason only. Unlike boxing, they do the fights that make sense. They also have the best talent out there. However, sometimes the UFC faces some challenges like injuries, hold-ups, or else that make fans crave a fight that doesn’t happen. Other times, fans just need to be loud enough for the match-makers to listen. As the local UFC advocate here at Total Apex Sports, I will take it upon myself to ask for fights that the UFC fans want to see before the year ends. Let’s begin!
5. Ian Machado Garry vs. Colby Covington
Oh, boy! Ian Garry just beat Michael ‘Venom’ Page in International Fight Week so this might be a long shot. Having said that, Garry and Covington have gone back and forth dissing each other and saying that want to fight. Now, this is the UFC so it goes like this: Garry says Colby is avoiding him and Covington says the Irishman is not taking the fight. Classic.
Garry is 15-0 and quickly climbing the rankings at 170. Covington has been in the top tier of the division for a while now, but having lost his three title challenges, he needs a big win to ever be considered a title contender again. Derailing the hype train of an Ian Garry would certainly put him in a good position. With Garry being a striker (who showed big grappling improvement in his last fight) and Covington a wrestler with elite cardio, it’s also a battle of styles we all want to see.
4. Ilia Topuria vs. Max Holloway
A few months ago, Ilia Topuria became the featherweight champion by putting Alex Volkanovski out cold. This was a shock to the system due to the dominance that Volkanovski had in the 145 division. This opened up the title picture for Max Holloway once again. Holloway had lost three times to Volk, which meant another title shot was not coming soon.
However, Topuria winning opened the door for Max, who had been beating everyone at featherweight not named Volkanovski. The division was wide open, but Max still needed to impact everyone to get another shot at the belt he once dominantly had. Then this happened:
Holloway delivered arguably the best KO in UFC history in the biggest event the UFC has ever put together. Better yet, Topuria was in the stands. The champ is saying Holloway is not taking the fight, but Max has stated he is ready to go. Can you guys just sign the dotted line and fight already?
3. Alex Pereira vs. Tom Aspinall
Alex Pereira is the new face of the UFC. He saved UFC 300 by stepping in as the main event. When Conor McGregor wasn’t able to fight at UFC 303 in International Fight Week, he stepped in again on short notice to save the day. Both times he delivered highlight-reel knockouts, by the way.
Poatan is already a two-division champ. He won at 185 and is the reigning 205 king. He has been saying for a while a heavyweight belt is in his sight. Tom Aspinall is the interim heavyweight champion right now. While the heavyweight division is kind of a mess right now, Aspinall will fight at Manchester versus Curtis Blaydes, which means that if he wins, he could be eyeing another fight before the year ends.
Aspinall is young, fast, strong, and well-rounded. He has no weakness whatsoever and definitely should be a top pound-for-pound fighter. Pereira is the real-life Thanos who is conquering the sport at an unprecedented pace. He’s arguably the best striker in the world, a future hall of famer, and a massive star in the UFC landscape right now. Just imagine the aura around this fight, goosebumps!
2. Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic
Much was said when Jon Jones vacated his light heavyweight belt and took three years to bulk up to go to heavyweight. Doubts surrounding Jones were loud, as his last title defense vs. Dominick Reyes wasn’t convincing, and at heavyweight, he would face power he had never seen before.
When Jones dominated Ciryl Gane in two minutes to get a new belt, the G.O.A.T case was pretty much sealed. Jones is almost unanimously the best MMA fighter of all time. His resume is unparalleled. But what about heavyweight? He won the belt and then suffered an injury that has seen him take a long time to recover. On the other hand, there is Stipe Miocic, the best heavyweight of all time. He has the record for title defenses in the division and also seemed unbeatable at one point.
Both are keen to fight, it’s just when. Unfortunately, it’s Jon Jones, the most unpredictable fighter of them all. Will we get this fight and the winner then faces the winner of Pereira vs. Aspinall? That’s the dream. Sometimes dreams come true, so let’s keep on dreaming!
1. Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler
We have been waiting for this fight for so long! It’s well-known that Conor McGregor is the biggest star the UFC has ever seen. Even if he’s not in his prime now, every time he fights, it’s a massive deal. Michael Chandler arrived in the UFC in 2022. Since then, he’s had five fights, he is 2-3. However, all six fights have been entertaining as hell and he has fought the cream of the crop. Dan Hooker, Charles Oliveira, Justin Gaethje, Tony Ferguson, and Dustin Poirier are as tough a resume as there is. Michael Chandler is incredibly exciting, and he vs. McGregor would be fireworks.
To make it better, they coached an Ultimate Fighter season against each other, and let’s just say they are not on good terms. It’s a great fight with an amazing build-up and two popular, high-level athletes looking for one last run to the top, please make it happen!
