Todd Bowles Joins NFL’s Competition Committee Gaining Growth

Todd Bowles

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach, Todd Bowles, is preparing his team to play the Washington Commanders at home on September 8th. The Bucs released their 53-man roster on Tuesday; it revealed nine rookies and many players from their practice squad. The Buccaneers and Todd Bowles look to win a fourth straight NFC South divisional title.

Head Coach Todd Bowles began his NFL career as an undrafted player. He played for eight years and then retired. Before Todd Bowles got his first chance to coach, Bowles spent two years with the Green Bay Packers in the player personnel department from 1995 to 1996. In 2000, he became the defensive back coach with the New York Jets and worked his way to becoming the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Bowles can now add another stat to his resume as he joins other coaches on the NFL’s Competition Committee.

The NFL Competition Committee was started in 1968 by Commissioner Pete Rozelle. The new Committee replaced the Rules Committee, which helped player development at that time. Since then, the Committee’s base of operations has been reviewing and changing the NFL’s rules. The Committee recently changed the kickoff rules and made hip tackling a violation. The Committee also reviews a long list of responsibilities in preparing for a new season.

According to the NFL website, the Committee changes rules and takes feedback from all 32 NFL teams about all aspects of the game, from technology to officiating. The Committee reviews tons of data, from player protection to gathering information from the NCAA to meeting with NFL coaches and general managers. After reviewing all the data before the season starts, the Committee meets with all 32 NFL owners to propose whatever changes are needed, which the owners vote upon. Head coach Todd Bowles will join this Committee, along with current head coaches on the Committee.

Todd Bowles Adds His Experience

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Head Coach Todd Bowles will be the fourth head coach on this Committee. Head coaches Mike Tomlin from the Pittsburgh Steelers, Sean McVay from the Los Angeles Rams, and Sean McDermott from the Buffalo Bills are also on the Committee. The Committee currently has two NFL General Managers. Hall of Fame Tampa Bay Buccaneers John Lynch, the general manager of the 49ers, also joins.

The NFL Competition Committee has two NFL CEOs: John Mara, president and owner of the New York Giants, and Rich McKay, co-chairman of the Atlanta Falcons. The committee also has one COO, Stephen Jones, from the Dallas Cowboys, and one executive vice president, Katie Blackburn, from the Cincinnati Bengals. Adding Todd Bowles and his three decades of game knowledge gives the Committee ten members.

Final Thought

The next time you get angry at how things are in the NFL and wonder who is making all the new changes, NFL fans, don’t shoot the messanger. By the looks of it, these are the people to blame. I’m not saying they deserve any blame, but since Todd Bowles and John Lynch just got there, what can they be blamed for?
