The Tennessee Titans General Manager survived “Black Monday” in the NFL; unfortunately for Ran Carthon, the organization had second thoughts about a “Turmoil Tuesday!” According to Adam Schefter, the Controlling Owner, Amy Adams Strunk, gave Carthon the news Tuesday morning of the departure. In his 2-year tenure, the team went 9-25 overall, including two separate head coaches, and will have the No. 1 pick in this spring’s NFL Draft.
Titans’ Moves Under Carthon
Ran Carthon made some significant moves last offseason to help improve the Titans’ roster and organization. After a 6-11 record resulting in their second straight losing season, the team parted ways with Head Coach Mike Vrabel. Carthon would bring in Brian Callahan to replace Vrabel but would cut his win total in half, finishing 3-14 this season. Callahan’s job seems to be safe at the moment.
The former GM spent plenty of money before the 2024 season, bringing in names like Calvin Ridley, L’Jarius Sneed, Tony Pollard, Chidobe Awuzie, Lloyd Cushenberry, and Sebastian Joseph-Day. The biggest move was probably the one they didn’t make, which was letting Derrick Henry walk and sign with the Baltimore Ravens. Henry had an MVP-type season and looks rejuvenated and motivated in Baltimore.
What’s Next For the Titans?
Tennessee still has a coach in Brian Callahan, and they own the top pick in the NFL Draft. Many think a quarterback will be selected with that pick, whether it is Colorado’s Shadeur Sanders or Miami’s Cam Ward. It looks like the Will Levis short-lived era in Tennessee may be over, so hopefully, he can land more mayonnaise commercials.
Levis may have the opportunity to compete with the future rookie but will most likely become the backup in “Music City.” To go along with the No. 1 pick, whoever the new GM is should have around $61 million to work with in NFL Free Agency.
Final Thoughts
It seems like so long ago that Vrabel had the Tennessee Titans organization competing in the playoffs. Ryan Tannehill never got the respect as the franchise quarterback despite making the playoffs three out of four years as the starter. The biggest mistake that had been made was keeping a Head Coach and replacing the General Managers. GMs should be able to bring in their staff if they choose to.
Vrabel is the hot name for the Patriots Head Coach, and Titans fans need to question the decision to get rid of him too early. In what seems to be a weak AFC South year after year, Tennessee should be aiming to compete with the Houston Texans.
