Chirping is a normal thing in basketball, especially with the Minnesota Timberwolves superstar, Anthony Edwards. However, there is a limit to chirping as it could also affect the mentality of the game and its outcome.
Competitive NBA basketball players portray this character to prove dominance and boost their confidence on the court. Also, some of these competitive NBA players do it for fun and to diminish the mentality of the opposing team. However, Anthony Edwards crossed the line with this one and it affected their third game against the Dallas Mavericks.
Will Edwards learn from this experience?
Minnesota Timberwolves Meet Their Waterloo
The Wolves were coming out of an intense game 7 against the Denver Nuggets when Edwards’ confidence lured him into calling out Kyrie Irving. Irving, who is also a very competitive guard, downplayed Anthony’s confidence by outperforming him. Thus, the Wolves lost their first game against Dallas.
Edwards crossed the line in their Game 3 loss when he talked down to his teammate, Karl-Anthony Towns, for not making an attempted 3-pointer. Chirping should be fun against other teams. However, taunting your teammate isn’t the route to take if you desire to contend for an NBA championship. Also, this could be one of the reasons the Wolves lost game three.
Chirping amongst teammates could diminish the mentality and performance in the game. For example, the Wolves’ struggles in Game 3 against the Mavericks became obvious when Edwards was caught calling out KAT.
Also, Edwards has been talking down on the Mavs duo but he couldn’t punch the Wolves ticket to the NBA Finals. Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving’s performance in the last game of the Conference Finals helped silence and humbled Edwards. The Mavericks are in the NBA Finals facing off against the Boston Celtics while the Wolves are in the offseason.
Anthony Edwards’ Chirping Scenarios 2023-24
Anthony Edwards is known as an aggressive offensive guard who enjoys taunting the opposing team. He does this verbally, with posters, or overall game performance. It is part of his game as it boosts his confidence and frustrates the opposition. Sometimes it brings out the dog in the opposition to outperform Edwards. These are some scenarios of him talking down to his opponents.
Timberwolves Vs. The Golden State Warriors (116-110)
Before this game Edwards wasn’t in his bag like the previous games, however, he had an encounter with the Warriors’ forward, Draymond Green. This should be the fan’s favorite because it’s an aggressive player who meets an aggressive player.
It started when Draymond Green fouled Anthony while he tried to get a layup. Draymond was taunting Edwards after the Minnesota guard said to Draymond, “Ain’t nobody worried about you.” This played well for the Minnesota guard as it boosted his morale to give his team the win.
Timberwolves Vs. LA Clippers (109-105)
This taunt was a hilarious exchange between Anthony Edwards and Kawhi Leonard. Rudy Gobert got fouled in the paint and converted it into points. During the free throw, Kawhi and Edwards had a little exchange with the Wolves’ point guard trying to talk down Kawhi by telling him he’s too old to play. Anthony said, “This is young vs. old.” However, Leonard is quite reserved so it did not amount to anything but a Clippers loss and a Minnesota triumph.
Timberwolves Vs. The Phoenix Suns
Anthony Edwards thrived to prove that he’s the best NBA player as he trash-talked Devin Booker and Kevin Durant. It happened during the regular season and their postseason series.
When the Minnesota Timberwolves battled the Phoenix Suns during the regular season to win 116-112, things got heated between Edwards and Booker. During the game, Devin Booker tried to shut Edwards up with his performance as he almost got 50 points, however, the Wolves still outperformed the Suns to win the game.
The most well-known spat between Edwards and the Suns was during the first round of the NBA Playoffs. It involved Kevin Durant as the player chosen to guard Anthony Edwards.
Both players tried to outperform each other on the court which led to Anthony Edwards telling Kevin Durant that the Suns’ All-Star player couldn’t guard him. It was an interesting sight to see as it was all love between Durant and Edwards.
