The Detroit Tigers and Arizona Diamondbacks played their second game of a three-game series at the snake’s Chase Field on Saturday night with right-handers Jack Flaherty and Zac Gallen pitching for their respective teams. The game remained scoreless for 5.1 innings with Arizona striking first against Flaherty and putting two runs on the board.
The Tigers not wanting to be shutout for the third time this month rallied in the top of the seventh inning by scoring six runs against the Diamondbacks with three of them being assigned to Gallen. Detroit’s hitters would score two more runs in the top of the 8th with Arizona scoring one run in the bottom of the same inning and losing 8-3.

Both Zac Gallen and Jack Flaherty pitched pretty well during the game and had a pitching duel going on but Flaherty would break first and allow two runs in the 6th inning. Even with the two runs Flaherty pitched incredibly well only allowing two runs in six innings and getting nine strikeouts which earned him a Quality Start.
Zac Gallen would also earn a Quality Start that night but ended up giving up three earned runs in the top of the seventh inning in which Detroit would score six runs total against Arizona’s pitching. Gallen was able to add ten strikeouts to his season total on Saturday on 98 pitches. Unfortunately, even though he pitched well enough to earn a QS, he was still saddled with the loss at the end of the game.
Joe Mantiply gave up the other three runs in the seventh inning after taking over for Gallen with Ginkel giving up another two runs in the top of the eighth inning.
Andrew Chafin would give up an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth inning with Beau Brieske coming in to close out the inning and eventually the ballgame.

Javier Baez was indisputably the hero of the Tiger’s offense on Saturday, going 4-5 with two runs and an RBI under his belt. Baez’s hits overall resulted in two doubles and two singles, with one of his doubles scoring Gio Urshela. Wenceel Perez also had himself a game going 2-4 with four RBIs, with each of his hits being triples. Perez’s triple in the seventh plated Kelly, Greene, and Canha, and he also brought Baez home on a Sac Fly at the top of the eighth.
The Snakes were only able to get three runs overall on the night, with Ketel Marte hitting an RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth inning, which brought Carroll home. The Snake’s Designated Hitter Joc Pederson hit a single which brought Marte home from third. Christian Walker drew a walk in the inning, which moved Pederson to second, and then he got to third on a Fiedler’s Choice but was unable to score.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. would hit a single in the bottom of eighth which would score the Snake’s Randal Grichuk making it 8-3 which would be the final score.
Series Recap
With their 6-4 loss on Sunday, the Tigers weren’t able to sweep the Diamondbacks but were still able to win the series. Overall, the Tigers outscored the Snakes 25-9, which shows their offense does have what it takes to compete even against good pitchers like Gallen. Detroit’s last series win was against the St. Louis Cardinals on May 1st, who are 20-26 in the NL Central right now. The Tigers begin a three-day set against the Royals on Monday.
The Diamondbacks on the other hand had a recent series win against the Cincinnati Reds before playing Detroit and will start a three day series against the Dodgers starting on Monday. I wish the snakes luck against a powerhouse team such as the Dodgers.
