Tigers drop Series Opener to Padres 3-0 on Monday

Tigers

Just as things were starting to get interesting for the Detroit Tigers, they took a small step backward on Monday night in a 3-0 loss to the Padres in San Diego

With the loss, the Tigers fall back to one game over the .500 mark at 70-69 and remain five games out of the final wild-card spot in the American League. If they’re going to have any realistic shot at making up that ground, it’s going to have to start with taking the next two games from the Padres.

Musgrove Silences Tigers’ Bats

The Tigers’ offense as a whole has been terrific for the past month or so while the Tigers have been on their 15-6 stretch over their last 21 ballgames. That offense didn’t show up against Padres’ right-hander Joe Musgrove on Monday evening though. As a team, the Tigers generated just six hits in the ballgame, all of them singles except for a line-drive double into the right field corner off the bat of Riley Greene off of Tanner Scott in the eighth inning.

The only other highlight for the Tigers’ offense was Trey Sweeney smacking a two-out single off Jason Adam in the seventh inning and then picking up his first career big-league stolen base. Credit where credit is due though, Musgrove was outstanding in this one. The 31-year-old hurler racked up eight strikeouts over six innings of shutout baseball – scattering just three hits and a pair of walks in the process. Musgrove generated 15 swings and misses on 94 pitches on the night, registering an elite CSW (called strikes + whiffs) of 37 percent.

Ty Madden Utilized in Bulk Role

After being used as a traditional starting pitcher in his MLB debut last week, rookie right-hander Ty Madden was utilized in a bulk role against the Padres on Monday night. The 24-year-old hurler came on to start the fourth inning with the Tigers already trailing 1-0. He allowed two additional runs on four hits while recording just one strikeout over his four-plus innings of work.

The damage done against him came in the eighth inning as Madden allowed three straight hits to start the inning – the final one an RBI single to Luis Arrez. He then turned the ball over to the bullpen and one of the inherited runners ultimately came around to score as well.

Madden got six whiffs on just 56 pitches in the ballgame – three each on his cutter and splitter – while registering a CSW of 25 percent. Through his first two outings with the Tigers, he sports a 3.00 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and a 3/3 K/BB over nine innings of work. Given how strong his swing-and-miss profile was in the minor leagues, you have to believe that it’s going to translate at the big-league level at some point.

News and Notes

The Pirates claimed left-hander Joey Wentz off of waivers. The 26-year-old hurler had been designated for assignment over the weekend to free up a spot on the team’s 40-man roster. Wenceel Perez (oblique) began a minor league rehab assignment at Triple-A Toledo on Monday.  He’s currently only swinging from the left side of the plate and may be limited there as well upon his eventual return.

The Tigers will send Keider Montero to the mound on Wednesday with Casey Mize following in Thursday’s series finale against the Padres. They also have a well-rested Kenta Maeda who hasn’t pitched in his usual bulk role this time through the rotation and could potentially work multiple innings in Wednesday’s game.
