All you can do is play the team that you’re scheduled to play. While teams have been beating up on the White Sox all season – as their 31-100 record will attest to – the Tigers continued to get the job done against them on Sunday afternoon, pounding out 14 hits in a 9-4 victory. It’s the Tigers’ third straight win over the White Sox and their 10th victory overall in their last 13 contests.
Tigers Roll to Third Straight Win
Colt Keith led the charge on offense, going 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI. He has been sizzling at the plate as of late – hitting .316 (54-for-171) with eight homers, 27 RBI, and three stolen bases over his last 45 games dating back to July 2. Andy Ibanez chipped in a two-run homer in the seventh inning while Kerry Carpenter singled, doubled, walked, and scored a pair of runs.
Andrew Vaughn had a nice afternoon for the White Sox, going 2-for-3 with a homer, double, and two RBI in a losing effort.
Beau Brieske functioned as an opener and put the Tigers in an early hole by giving up two runs in the opening inning. Bryan Sammons came on in the second though and held them to just one run on three hits over 4 1/3 innings to pick up the first victory of his big-league career. The late-game trio of Will Vest, Tyler Holton, and Jason Foley allowed just one additional run over the final 3 2/3 innings to close it out.
With the victory, the Tigers are now just one game under the .500 mark at 65-66. They’re just 7.5 games out of the final Wild Card spot in the American League. Are they serious contenders to secure that spot, of course not, but stranger things have happened. Just playing competitive baseball and giving fans something to watch in September would be a nice change from previous years.
Ty Madden to Debut Monday

The Tigers announced on Sunday that 24-year-old right-hander Ty Madden will be promoted from Triple-A Toledo on Monday to make his MLB debut against the White Sox. Madden, a first-round selection (32nd overall) by the Tigers from the 2021 draft, hasn’t exactly earned the promotion with his work at Triple-A Toledo. In 18 starts there, he has registered a cringe-inducing 7.97 ERA, 1.77 WHIP, and a 102/40 K/BB across 79 innings of work.
Perhaps president of baseball operations Scott Harris believes that the talent level of the White Sox won’t be any different than facing a strong Triple-A team, so it makes for a nice transition in his first big-league start. Just don’t expect him to start dominating like Tarik Skubal right out of the gate.
News and Notes
Casey Mize (hamstring) dominated in his final minor league rehab start at Triple-A Toledo on Saturday, racking up seven strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings of three-run baseball. He’s eligible to return from the 60-day IL on Friday and is expected to make his next start with the Tigers. Alex Faedo was activated from the paternity leave list and immediately placed on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder strain. That must have been one heavy baby.
Speaking of babies, Will Vest is expected to hit the paternity leave list himself at some point next week.
Brant Hurter is expected to function as a traditional starter on Tuesday against the Angels. While he has pitched well in his role as a bulk reliever, Hurter has yet to throw more than 78 pitches in any of his four outings thus far and may not be able to go deep enough to qualify for a win.
