Tiger Woods has been battling injuries and inconsistent play all year. As the US Open approached, he was hoping to capture his 16th major championship. It did not start off well. At Pinehurst, Woods shot an opening 74, putting him at four-over par. He is nine shots back of the leaders Patrick Cantley and Rory McIlroy. It wasn’t that he didn’t have opportunities. After the round, Woods lamented missed opportunities.
Tiger Woods Laments Missed Opportunities At US Open
Tiger Woods has often been erratic off the tee box, which gets any golfer into trouble. However, it was off the fairways that Woods had issues. He only missed two fairways all day, which is usually a recipe for success. However, he only hit nine greens in regulation. Woods lamented the missed opportunities at the US Open.
“I didn’t hit the ball very well. It added up to quite a bit of distance away from the flag. It’s not where I wanted to be on a lot of the holes. It just ended up being that far away because I wasn’t as sharp as I needed to be.”
Tiger Woods usually has been deadly with his irons. They failed him today, but this has been the story all season. This year, he has only hit 50% of his greens. The hallmark of his game for years was his ability to limit mistakes and snipe the pin from the middle of fairways. Now, Woods finds himself scrambling to make par on a majority of holes. He will need to have a much better second round if he is to even make the cut at this year’s US Open.
Will Woods Win Another Major?
The injuries are piling up. More often than not, Tiger Woods finds himself fighting to make the cut and hanging out at the bottom of the leaderboard. While Woods finds himself every so often with an opportunity to win, he has one round where he implodes, putting him out of contention. If Woods is going to find himself lifting another trophy at a major championship, he has to put together four solid rounds of play.
The most likely way that Tiger Woods wins another major is at The Masters. With the other majors like the US Open, the course is different every year. Certain courses may not lend themselves to Woods’ abilities. However, Augusta National is a course where we have seen Woods have success. It was the sight of his last major championship. If he can use his intimate knowledge of the course to get hot over a weekend, he could capture another major.
Unless Tiger Woods has an amazing second round, he is likely out of contention for the US Open. If he can hit a few more greens tomorrow, he might make the cut, which would be a confidence boost. That might be what he needs at this point in his career.
