Tiger Woods is one of the biggest names in the world of golf and all sports. The sport of golf is going through a difficult time right now. Viewership is down, and the fracturing of the sport due to the LIV Tour has left a bad taste in many people’s mouths. However, Woods is part of a group launching a tech-infused golf league in 2025 called the TGL. This will be a team-based event and today Woods announced the other three players that will be on his TGL team.

The team is called the Jupiter Links Golf Club. Joining the 15-time major champion are Max Homa, Tom Kim, and Kevin Kisner. Homa is a six-time PGA Tour winner and recently played with Woods during the first two rounds at Augusta. Kim is only 21 years old and already has three wins on the tour. Kisner is a PGA Tour veteran who has four wins under his belt.
“I have already shared my excitement and optimism for TGL as a league and product,” Woods said in a release. “Now that we have finalized our roster with a team of world-class golfers, I am even more confident that this group will proudly represent the Jupiter area and connect with our fans for years to come.”
Tech-Infused Golf
The TGL will be unlike anything you’ve ever seen in the sport of golf. Six teams of four will be vying for the league title. Each hole will combine a golf simulator with a morphing live green. To begin each hole, players will tee off in a phase the league is calling screenplay. Once the player is within 50 yards, they head to the GreenZone. The official league website says this about the GreenZone.
“For anything inside approximately 50 yards, players move to a physical, custom-built GreenZone, a 22,475-square-foot short game area that transforms between holes. The GreenZone includes a 41-yard-wide turntable that rotates the green to change approach angles and can morph its topography using nearly 600 actuators.”
The GreenZone is about the size of four basketball courts, which puts the fans right in the middle of the action. While each hole will be played in the same place, the technology allows each hole to be different.
League Format
Tiger Woods and the many celebrity backers of this league are bringing a brand new format to the sport of golf. Each match pits two teams against each other and consists of 15 holes. Two sessions will happen. Session one is holes 1-9 and has three team members alternating shots. Holes 10-15 are singles, which have another three team members, each playing two holes against an opponent.
Each hole is worth one point. If there is a tie, no point is awarded, and there is no rollover. In the event of a tie, the match goes to overtime. Overtime is a 3v3 closest to the pin competition.
It is meant to feel like the Ryder Cup, one of the most popular golf events. Scoring works similar to how the NHL does the standings. Any victory, whether in regulation or overtime, is worth two points. An overtime loss is worth one point, while a regulation loss nets a team nothing.
Primetime Golf
Tiger Woods and the creators of the TGL know what they are doing. The league is set to kick off on ESPN on January 7, 2025. It is scheduled to be in the Monday night slot. What is the advantage of this? Monday Night Football has just ended, and people are looking to fill the sports void on Monday nights. This should be the perfect change of pace for sports fans.
Tiger Woods is excited about this league. It has the backing of the PGA Tour and the hope is it can revitalize the sport of golf.
