Tiger Woods is one of many superstar athletes who have children in the sport. LeBron James is hoping to play with his son Bronny in the NBA. Marvin Harrison and Jerry Rice have sons who will be heading to the NFL. Charlie Woods is the son of the 15-time major champion and hoped to play in a major alongside his father. He participated in a US Open qualifying event and, unfortunately, had a rough day.
Tiger Woods’ Son Charlie Woods US Open Bid
US Open qualifying is a huge event that takes place over 109 sites between April 22 and May 20. Charlie Woods participated in one of those qualifiers in Port St. Lucie, Florida. In order to advance to the next stage, golfers had to finish in the top five of the tournament. Two alternates would also be chosen if something happened to the top five. The younger Woods didn’t sniff the top five.
In the first six holes, he had a bogey and two double bogeys en route to a nine-over round of 81. This isn’t the first time the son of Tiger Woods has failed to qualify for an event. He shot 16 over at an event in February in an effort to qualify for a PGA Tour event. While this may be disappointing for him, he still has plenty of time to make his mark on the sport.
Living In The Shadow Of Greatness
This has to be tough for Charlie Woods. Tiger Woods put golf on the map, which is the reason many people came to the sport. His golf career will be put under a microscope. Shooting nine over at a US Open qualifying event is very good. I am positive that I could not shoot nine over at that course. I’m lucky if I shoot nine over at my local course meant for the average joe.
However, the younger Woods has expectations about whether he likes it or not. From a fan perspective, we want to see the father-son duo share the course. At only 15 years old, he has plenty of time to qualify for events and will continue to compete.
Final Thoughts
I personally hope Tiger Woods and Charlie Woods can play a round in a major championship together. It would be awesome for the sport and draw viewers. In general, it would be great to see the elder Woods compete for another major. While he made the cut at The Masters, he wasn’t a factor on the weekend. Will we ever see the father-son duo play a round together? Only time will tell.
