The Timberwolves franchise saw tremendous improvement after following their previous offseason blueprints to assemble quality players. These players’ performance in the 2024 season elevated the franchise’s outlook since the 2003-04 season.
The Wolves knocked out the Phoenix Suns, a team filled with superstars, in a four-game clean sweep. Also, they battled hard against the former defending champions, the Denver Nuggets, to advance to their first Western Conference Finals since 2005.
Will the franchise meet its expectations with this new extension that runs through the 2027-28 season?
The Timberwolves Franchise Extends Chris Finch’s Contract
Chris Finch gives the franchise hope after assembling the puzzle pieces to create a sustainable championship-contending team. Thus, Finch’s tenure with the Minnesota Timberwolves elevated the players’ and team’s outlook. Though the Wolves keep the value of the contract undisclosed, ESPN’s Adrain Wojnarowski first reports that:
After the best season in franchise history, Minnesota Timberwolves coach Chris Finch has agreed on a four-year contract extension that will take him through the 2027-28 season.
Finch can’t wait for another opportunity to elevate the team to the NBA Finals. Here is what Finch said about the franchise’s decision:
I’m proud of the way we’ve been able to establish a great culture here with the Timberwolves and I look forward to continuing to lead this organization and make our fans proud.
Finch’s Impact on the Timberwolves
The Wolves franchise signed Chris Finch in 2021 after dismissing Ryan Saunders. This would be Finch’s first head coach job on an NBA staff. Throughout his NBA career, Finch worked as an assistant coach for 10 seasons with the Houston Rockets, Nuggets, and New Orleans Pelicans.
In his first three seasons as the Wolves head coach, the team played three consecutive postseason games. These games helped Finch grow as a coach as he made more playoff appearances. Though the Wolves didn’t advance to the NBA Finals, this was a great achievement for the team.
Chris Finch’s impact on the franchise helped to build and develop Anthony Edwards, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Rudy Gobert. Currently, he records 160 wins and 127 losses with the Timberwolves and a winning percentage of (.557).
The Timberwolves finished third in the Western Conference, winning 56 games out of 82 games. With Finch’s playbook, the team improved offensively and, most especially, defensively. Thus, extending the contract to accommodate Finch for four more years should maintain the winning culture.
Final Thoughts
The Minnesota Timberwolves are a young and up-and-coming team. After advancing to the Conference Finals in the 2024 postseason, this young team gradually matured into becoming a solid title contender.
Anthony Edwards leads the way to become the face of, not just the franchise but also, the NBA as a whole. Therefore, Chris Finch’s player development scheme could work to incorporate more young players coming into his team with ease.
On the other hand, Finch might not outperform his previous season. The one-time Coach of the Month could experience a decline in performance because other Western Conference teams are aggressively building to become title contenders.
However, Tim Connelly, the President of Basketball Operations for the Timberwolves, is positive about the outlook of the franchise with this new extension:
Chris is a wonderful coach and an even better person. We are thrilled that he is being rewarded with a well-earned extension. Under his guidance the team has improved every year, he’s the perfect leader for our organization.
