The End of an Era: A Look at the Splash Bros 13 Amazing Years Together

Golden State Warriors

The Splash Bros wouldn’t have been a legendary duo if the Golden State Warriors hadn’t extended Klay Thompson’s contract heading into the 2014-15 season. In their prime, the Splash Brothers were the greatest shooting backcourt in NBA history.

In 2009, the Golden State Warriors drafted Stephen Curry as their seventh overall draft pick to join their veteran guard Monta Ellis. After two years the Warriors franchise drafted Klay Thompson 11th overall. This combo performance attracted the nickname Splash Brothers, where splash indicates slamming the ball into the basket especially from beyond the arc. Thus, what iconic moments did the Splash Bros share on the court?

The Splash Bros’ First Outstanding Performances

Splash Bros

The Splash Bros’ shooting backcourt performance in the 2012-13 season was incredible as the All-Star duo broke records. Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson played together before the 2012-13 season. However, their performance wasn’t as solid that season.

During the 2012-13 season, the four-time NBA Champs made 438 three points in a single season. Also, during that period, this achievement was the most by an NBA duo in a season. Curry made 272 three points, while Thompson made 211.

This feat served as the foundation the Splash Bros used to add momentum to their future outstanding performance together. The following season (2013-14) this All-Star duo increased their three-point made stats by one. Curry got 261 three points, while Klay Thompson got 223. However, it didn’t end there.

The Warriors dynamic duo made it into the 2014 US National team to win a gold medal at the FIBA World Cup. Also, these guards were responsible for 43 of the 77 three points made in 13 games by Team USA (the most by any duo in the competition).

The All-NBA duo Makes History For The Golden State Warriors

If it was about just making three-pointers, any player in the NBA could do that. However, the Splash Bros’ offensive performance on the court didn’t just give the Warriors a competitive advantage over other teams in the  Western Conference.

The 2014-15 season at the Golden State Warriors was the highlight of the Curry-Thompson era. That was also the season when Head Coach Steve Kerr began his tenure with the team. Due to the dynamic duo’s achievement for the Warriors that season, Curry and Thompson became the first teammates to start as a guard in the NBA All-Star game since 1975. Also, with Steve Kerr in the mix the Splash Brothers ended the Warriors franchise NBA Championship drought.

Thus, in the 2014-15 season, the Golden State Warriors clinched their first NBA title after 40 years of waiting. Also, Curry and Thompson made the All-NBA team as the first teammates on the Warriors roster to achieve this feat since the 1991-92 season.

Some Iconic Moments For This Dynamic Duo

During 2015-16, the All-Star duo found themselves down 3-1 in the Western Conference Finals to the OKC Thunder. To tie the series at 3-3 Thompson scored 41 points with 11 made three-pointers to give his team the win in Game 6. Also, the duo was the first teammate in NBA history to finish a playoff game with at least 30 three-pointers made in the Western Conference finals against OKC.

During the 2018-19 season, the Warriors played the Chicago Bulls on October 29, 2018. During the game, Thompson made 14 three-point shots, suppressing Steph Curry for the most triples made in a game. Now, Thompson scored 52 points in 27 minutes while Steph Curry got 50 points, making the duo the first NBA teammates to have each scored 50 or more points in a contest through their team’s first eight games.

Final Thoughts

Steph Curry and the Warriors franchise said “night-night” to Klay Thompson as he left the club to join the Dallas Mavericks. The dynamic duo was a sight to see during their time together. Curry and Thompson’s offensive prowess brought the franchise four NBA championships. Now that Thompson plays for the Dallas Mavericks, the Warriors would look for a backup guard or forward to ease the offensive burden on Steph Curry.
