The Rock Reflects on Father’s Death, Regrets Unspoken

The Rock

Rocky Johnson, the WWE Hall of Famer father of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, died of apparently natural causes in 2020. Recently, during an interview with the ‘PBD Podcast,’ the equally talented wrestler and actor shared how his father’s death had him traumatized, though they had a falling out at the time.

A Sudden and Unexpected Loss

The Rock revealed that his father died, and he did not see it coming. The Rock mentioned that he was shocked when he found out about his father’s death. It was so sudden for him to lose his father. However, he did not have a very good relationship with his father. He never got an opportunity to reconnect with him again before his death.

“I wasn’t prepared for it because my dad died suddenly just like that. An embolism traveled out up and ended his life. So, it happened suddenly,” Johnson recalled. “I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye. And here’s the thing, brother, this is just — it’s life. A month before he died, we got into the biggest fight we have ever gotten into, and we never had a chance to reconcile that. It was brutal.”

This particular fight had been bothering The Rock even after his father’s death, as there were issues he never got to sort out. For The Rock, this was very shocking because, at this moment, it made him realize how uncertain life is.

Life’s Eye-Opening Lessons

The Rock acknowledges that even though they had issues between them at the time of his father’s passing, the event made him realize that life is full of surprises. He stressed that no one can predict what will happen, and one must cherish the time with family and friends.

He also tied this lesson to his participation in the Make-A-Wish Foundation which seems to be the flagship charity of the WWE. He talked of how he gets back home feeling more grateful every time he is assigned to work with sick children with little time to live. This last point greatly resonated with him.

A Complicated Father-Son Relationship

The Rock has been candid about his relationship with his father, describing it as one built on strict love. However, there are some issues in the father-son relationship; Dwayne feels his father is proud of him and his success in the wrestling business, just like Rocky was.

Still, there is one thing that he deeply regrets during his time at the company. He never got to bid his friend a proper farewell. He always had the impression his father was proud of his success. Despite their disagreements, Rocky was initially reluctant to join the wrestling business.

Rocky Johnson’s death was a significant event in The Rock’s life as it made him realize the fragility of life and the need to embrace one’s family. Their unresolved fight still hurts so bad, but he rises above it by reflecting on his father’s memories. He never got the chance to say goodbye. But he is confident his father would have been proud of the man he became.
