The Raiders Must Avoid Ashton Jeanty Pick

Raiders, Ashton Jeanty, NFL Draft

The Las Vegas Raiders hold the No. 6 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, and the mock draft buzz around running back Ashton Jeanty is growing. While the Boise State star is electric with the ball in his hands, drafting a running back this high doesn’t make sense for a larger team. Between questions at quarterback, holes on the offensive line, and a defense that still lacks playmakers, the Raiders can’t afford to spend a top-10 pick on a luxury position.

Quarterback and O-Line Come First

The Raiders’ biggest question mark heading into 2025 is still at quarterback. Geno Smith may be a short-term fix, but he’s not the long-term answer. Without a clear plan under center, spending a top pick on a running back puts the cart before the horse. Add an offensive line that struggled to open running lanes or protect the pocket last season. Then, it becomes clear where the investment needs to go. Building through the trenches and securing a franchise quarterback should be the priority, not another skill player.

Deep Running Back Draft Class

Running backs like Omarion Hampton (UNC), Quinshon Judkins (Ohio State), Dylan Sampson (Tennessee), and Kaleb Johnson (Iowa) are all expected to be available in the day two rounds. They could produce behind a rebuilt offensive line and cost less draft capital. The modern NFL has clarified that you don’t need to draft a running back early to find production. The Raiders would be better off addressing other key needs early and grabbing value later.

Final Thoughts

If the Raiders want to shift the trajectory of their franchise, they need to invest in foundational pieces. A player like Shedeur Sanders gives them a potential face-of-the-franchise quarterback who can thrive in today’s pass-heavy NFL. Or, if they want to build from the line of scrimmage, Will Campbell offers elite tackle talent that can anchor their offensive line for a decade. Both picks make far more sense than reaching for a running back in a loaded class.
