Presidents Cup Day 2: After the US team took a commanding 5-0 lead on the first day of the Presidents Cup, it appeared the US would win in another rout. Not so fast! What once looked like a blowout is now an even match heading into the weekend.
Historic Presidents Cup Comeback
In a shocking turn of events at Royal Montreal Golf Club, the International team roared back from a seemingly insurmountable deficit.
“Every good comeback starts with a deficit.” That’s how International team captain Mike Weir responded when asked the obvious question: How did he address his players after the Thursday beatdown when the US team won all five matches?
The International team swept all five Presidents Cup matches on Friday in a historic comeback. This is the first time in Presidents Cup history that one team has won all the matches on back-to-back days, and it’s never been done in Ryder Cup history, either.
Presidents Cup Slaughter
Most matches come down to the last few holes, where every shot could win or lose the match. Excitement like that makes events like the Presidents Cup exciting for fans to watch. But that wasn’t the case Friday in Montreal. Friday’s Presidents Cup was so one-sided that the US team led in only one match all day. And that was only for one hole.
The International team showed they were out for revenge starting with the first match. Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama and Korea’s Sungjae Im tied a Presidents Cup record with a 7&6 blowout of Americans Xander Schaufelle and Patrick Cantlay.
The Canadian duo of Mackenzie Hughes and Corey Connors wowed the crowd with a 6&5 shellacking of Americans Wyndham Clark and Tony Finau.
Australian Adam Scott passed Ernie Els to become the leading scorer in International team history when he and Taylor Pendrith crushed Sahith Theegala and Collin Morikawa 5&4.
Presidents Cup History
This marked the first time in Presidents Cup history that one team won three matches in a single session on or before the 14th hole. In the two matches that did go 18 holes, the International team managed to pull out narrow victories to win a full point.
The final putt of the day was the perfect ending for the International team. Korea’s Sungjae Im drained a clutch 15-foot par putt to tie the hole and win the match. The International team and the crowd went wild, while the Americans could only grin and bear it in disbelief.
An “Incredible” Comeback Could Lead to An Exciting Weekend
The comeback was extra special for Adam Scott. He’s making his 11th appearance in the Presidents Cup without tasting a single victory. Scott described the day as “incredible.”
“To come back and show everyone what this team is made of after a tough day out there yesterday is just incredible. … This team knows what it’s capable of now.”
Jim Furyk expected the Internationals to fight back. Yet it’s doubtful he expected his heavily favored squad to lose all five matches.
“I said yesterday, ‘Their back’s against the wall. They’re going to come out firing,'” Furyk said. “Well, I’m sure my guys are a little pissed off right now back in the team room. The idea is to come out firing tomorrow.”
Many thought the Presidents Cup was all but over yesterday. Just 24 hours and one historic comeback later, the Presidents Cup is all tied up (5-5), and it looks like we’re in for an exciting weekend.
