The Masters is the biggest major of the year. The $20 million purse is not bad either. Rory McIlroy is competing in his 17th Masters looking to add the Green Jacket and be crowned a Career Grand Slam champion. McIlroy entered Saturday in third place. This article will look at his moving day round on Saturday. We will also speculate who has a shot at moving in front of McIlroy on Sunday.
Round 3 At the Masters
The third day of the Masters is called “Moving Day” and the move is what happened. Justin Rose started the day leading but fell down the leaderboard. McIlroy leads a major at the end of round 3 for the first time since 2014 at 12 under par. McIlroy shot a 66 in round 3 and will be paired with Bryson DeChambeau in the final round of a major for the first time.
DeChambeau shot a 69 in round 3. He is 10 under par, only 2 shots behind McIlroy. McIlroy, in the first four holes of the day, had 3 birdies and an eagle. That is a heck of a way to start a round in a major. With history on the line, can McIlroy complete the Grand Slam and finally win the Masters?
Who Had the Worst Day
Rose started the day at the top of the leaderboard at 8 under. That changed quickly on day 3. Rose had a horrible day at Augusta with the course getting the better of him. Rose ended day 3 shooting a 75, dropping 3 shots. He sits sixth on the leaderboard at -5.
Scottie Scheffler also had a rough day on the course tied with Rose with a -5 score at the end of round 3. He settled for an even-par 72. He struggled to gain any strokes on the course on Saturday. Both of these gentlemen struggled a great deal today. We will see if they can make a run in round 4 on Sunday.
Shot of the Day and Final Thoughts
The shot of the day came when DeChambeau hit a 48-foot putt and came within 2 shots of McIlroy. A close second was the eagle chip-in from McIlroy on the third hole of the day. Tomorrow, the final pairing will have McIlroy and DeChambeau. They will give us a great show on the course.
If McIlroy plays the course like he did today, we will witness history. We will crown a Career Grand Slam Champion for the first time in the last 25 years. The last one to capture this title was Tiger Woods. The final round of the Masters will be one with history on the line and McIlroy could win his first Green Jacket.
