It’s about time to experience the Jayson Tatum game. Since the NBA Finals started, Jayson Tatum has been a bit quiet, leaving Jaylen Brown and Jrue Holiday to take the show.
Another way to look at this is that the Boston Celtics Head Coach Joe Mazzulla knows what he’s doing as Tatum’s performance plummets. Or the All-Star player isn’t in his bag yet. Regardless of the angle, the former seems to win the vote as Mazzulla says this about Tatum.
“I think because of the type of player that he is, it’s always going to look different because of his versatility. I think he’s only going to get better. He makes greatness look easy because of his ability to impact the game in many different ways. He’s going to continue to get better and better and better. It’s an honor to coach him.”
What should we expect in Game 3 from the Boston Celtics Forward Jayson Tatum?
Jayson Tatum Game Performance in the 2024 NBA Finals
Jayson’s performance has been low since the commencement of the 2024 NBA Finals. Due to NBA spectators’ observance, there are questions about who’s the better player – Jaylen Brown or Jayson Tatum. But that will be another conversation for another day.
The Boston Celtics are up 2-0 against the Dallas Mavericks despite Tatum’s decline in performance. Head Coach Joe Mazzulla understood that the Mavericks would come for their duo. Therefore, Mazzulla maintained his playbook strategy which helped the team win in two straight games.
Luck was on Mazzulla’s side as Kristaps Porzingis returned from injury and scored 20 points, claiming six rebounds and three blocks. It was a shock to everyone as it has been a long time since such a performance display happened. Also, Game 1’s top performer was Jaylen Brown as he scored 22 points, three blocks, and six rebounds.
Tatum’s game one performance fetched him 16 points, and 11 rebounds which contributed to the Celtics’ wins against the Mavericks (107-89). With this performance, it’s evident that Tatum focused on playing defensively to stop the opposing team.
Game 2 was close as the Mavericks would have tied the series. However, they lost to the Celtics led by Jrue Holiday who shot 78.5% from the floor bagging a double-double of 26 points and 11 rebounds. Still, the Celtics’ forward was nowhere to be found.
Though Tatum had more shot attempts than his teammates he only made 27.3% of the shots. Aside from shot attempts, Tatum played a playmaker role by dishing 12 assists to help Holiday add to the score sheet. Also, if he got a triple-double it would have been better as he scored 18 points and nine rebounds.
What To Expect In Game 3 With Boston Celtics Injury Update
After the Game 2 win against the Dallas Mavericks (105-98), the Celtics’ Star Center, Kristaps Porzingis got on the injury roster with a rare injury case. The seven-footer might miss Game 3 though his injury status is questionable.
However, whether Porzingis plays in Game 3, Jayson Tatum must wake up from his slumber because it’s not in the TD Garden. On the other hand, Joe Mazzulla’s coaching style could favor the All-Star forward again as the head coach could make it to the finals without his core rim protector, Porzingis.
Jayson Tatum acknowledged his shortcomings during this best-of-seven finals and spoke about that “one game.” Could Game 3 be it?
“I understand that it could take one game. One game, I could explode. All the percentages and things like that could change. So it’s just that mindset of, I’m one game away or whatever that means. Like I said the other day, I know what it’s like to be in this position and lose. This time around, I’m trying to do any and everything possible to have a different outcome. I know I need to shoot the ball better. And I plan on it. Not letting that affect everything else that I need to do on the court to help us win.”
