The Indianapolis Colts Make Free Agency Moves

Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts made a couple of moves in the last week to clear cap space and take cap space. The first surprise was the release of Kicker Matt Gay who was only 2 years into a 4 year contract. The second is the re-signing of Tight End Mo-Alie Cox. He has been with the team since 2018. What does this mean with the NFL Draft coming and could they be clearing cap space for a reason? We will find out in this article.

Release Of Kicker Matt Gay

The Colts signed Gay to a four-year contract worth $22.5 million. At the time, it was the most lucrative contract given to a free-agent kicker. It was almost a surprise, but the Colts made a move that would suggest they would release Gay. That move was signing Kicker Spencer Shrader who spent time with the Colts in 2024.

The release of Gay cleared $2.75 million in cap space making me believe the Colts are still looking to make moves to make the roster more competitive. This move came after Gay made only 82.1% of his field goal attempts (64 of 78) in the last two seasons. He was also only 50% from 50+ yards. That ranked near the bottom of the league. The Colts and fans alike wish him well in his future endeavors.

Mo-Alie Cox Stays With Colts

The Colts also re-signed veteran Tight End Mo-Alie Cox. The details have not been released as of yet but some speculated that it is a one-year deal. Cox has been with the Colts since 2017. He caught 12 passes for 147 yards with 1 touchdown in 2024.

He was on the field for 44% of the team’s possessions primarily being a run blocker. That is a strength of his game. In his career with the team, he has 114 receptions, 1443 yards, and 15 touchdowns. They now have six tight ends on their 90-man roster who are Cox, Will Malory, Sean McKeon, Drew Ogletree, Albert Okwuegbunam, and Jelani Woods.

Final Thoughts and Speculation

The moves the Colts have made this week make me think two or three things. The first is could the Colts make cap room for a trade for the Bengals’ Trey Hendrickson. They could be wanting to add that beast of a pass rusher to an already talented D-line and reunite with former DC Lou Anarumo.

The second thing is will they draft a tight end or are they eyeing another player like a linebacker? I think the latest moves from the team signal that General Manager Ballard is open to whatever option will make the team compete at a higher level and take the next step. The NFL Draft is less than two weeks away. Stay up to date with Total Apex Sports for all the latest news.
