Major League Cricket – Texas Super Kings thump San Francisco Unicorns by 7 Wickets

After a shaky start, that included one no-result game, the cricket team from Texas is finally out of the blocks with a solid performance against the San Francisco Unicorns. Having won the toss the Texas Super Kings chose to bowl, backing their bowlers to restrict the dynamic Unicorn’s batting lineup. Which is what they did.

Having bundled out the opposition for just 127 in 17.5 overs, the game came down to the Super Kings batsman pacing themselves to get the score with as little hassle as possible, which is what they did. Texas Super Kings openers Devon Conway and captain Faf du Plessis provided a solid foundation, with an opening stand of 61 in 4.5 overs. And that set things up as the Texans romped home with 43 legal deliveries to spare.

In cricket, and especially in T20 cricket sometimes all it takes is one startling performance to set the team on the path to victory. The game against the San Francisco Unicorns, who are by no means a pushover, features stars of the caliber of Jake Fraser-McGurk and Corey Anderson. Thus it required a disciplined bowling performance, who could contain the batsman at both ends.

And that’s exactly what happened. Once Zia Ul Haq Muhammad knocked over the Texas Super Kings top order in a relatively quick time, it followed a disciplined effort from veterans Dwayne Bravo and Mitchell Santner who gave away very little, picking up three wickets in the process. Then came Mohammad Mohsin, the Pakistan-born cricketer who produced a blazing spell, knocking over the lower middle order and the tail for very little. Finishing on 13 for 4 in 3.5 overs.

A Blazing Chase by The Texas Super Kings

When chasing a score that is below par, there are several ways a team batting second can approach it. Either entrench yourself and play it relatively safe ensuring as few hiccups as possible. The other is to go about it in T20 style: which is to play the ball on merit, approach the game with an attacking intent, and let the result take care of itself. The Texas Super Kings went with option two. And it paid off.

Openers Conway and du Plessis got off to a rollicking start, smashing the Unicorns’s bowling to all parts. The Texas Super Kings captain in particular was severe, hammering four sixes in his score of 34 that came at a strike rate of 200.00. Once the openers were gone, the batters to follow simply had to continue the flow as Aaron Hardie, Milind Kumar, and Mitchell Santner closed off the game in style.

How quickly things can change. Following the washout against the Washington Freedom, the pressure was on the Texas Super Kings to produce a matching performance, given their opening game defeat to the La Knight Riders. A boy did they do it. The strength of this Texas side lies in its bowling. With a slightly top-heavy batting unit, a lot depends on how the bowlers contain the opposition batsman, which they did. The question is can they maintain this momentum and hold onto their top position? With the current form and leadership, it appears they will.
