Texas Longhorns Remain No. 1 After Explosive Week 4

Texas Longhorns Christian Clark

The AP Poll Rankings are out, and the Texas Longhorns are still at the top. After an explosive debut by Arch Manning and a thorough rout of ULM, Texas held steady. The lighter end of the schedule is officially over. Texas will need to continue their staunch offense against their SEC opponents. Ideally, Quinn Ewers will return for the beginning of the SEC contests. After their impressive display in Week 4, the Texas Longhorns should feel re-energized going against Mississippi State.

Past Performances: Texas Longhorns Rising

The Texas Longhorns defense continues to shine through in remarkable ways. Texas already held the title of most interceptions in the SEC this year going into the game. They widened the gap even further with another two pick offs, snagging a season-high record. This is the kind of output the Texas Longhorns need if they hope to win it all.

Several players put up impressive performances, including running back Jaydon Blue and tight end Gunnar Helm. Arch Manning stepped in and put up a strong passing game, comfortably finding his receivers. This most recent game against ULM ended 51-3, with Texas coming out on top. The Texas Longhorns will look to capitalize on their momentum heading into Week 5.

Upcoming Opponents: Mississippi State and the SEC

Everyone is anxious to see how the Texas Longhorns will fare against the SEC powerhouses. Their first match against Mississippi State will be closely watched by fans and players alike. What is still uncertain at this point is starting quarterback Quinn Ewers’ role against Mississippi State. He is currently still dealing with abdominal strains after going down in the UTSA game.

Sources say that Quinn Ewers’ prognosis is positive but cannot definitively say he’ll be active. Sarkisian may benefit from resting him a little longer, but Ewers hasn’t yet been cleared. At this point in time, the Texas Longhorns must rely on Arch Manning’s abilities. Considering how well Manning has done so far, that shouldn’t prove too worrisome at all.

Final Thoughts

Coach Steve Sarkisian is seeing the path open up for the Texas Longhorns to continue dominating. The Texas Longhorns stand tall at the top of the latest AP Rankings. It is their best placement in the polls since 2008. Regardless of where the polls place them, he cautions that they aren’t everything.

“The way this is set up, back in the day, the polls dictated who got to play for a national championship, and ultimately, who won the national championship. Nowadays, you got to go earn it,” Sarkisian said. “I think it’s good to show that, ‘hey, we know what we’re capable of,’ but at the end of the day we’re gonna have to go earn this thing. And the mission is far from over.”

The mission is off to a stellar start, that’s for sure. Arch Manning’s debut went swimmingly, aside from a couple hiccups, and the Texas Longhorns are off. There is still a great deal of football left to play this season. They will stampede their way into the SEC against Mississippi State next week at home. Expect status updates on Quinn Ewers later in the week, closer to game day.
