No. 3 Texas Longhorns vs. No. 10 Michigan Wolverines Preview Excitement

Quarterbacks Start, Bench, Cut Texas Longhorns Quarterback Quinn Ewers

Last week saw opening bids from the Texas Longhorns and Michigan Wolverines for the championships of their respective conferences. The Longhorns dominated their opponents while the Wolverines…won by far less than that. No doubt Michigan is looking to improve on last week’s performance. Their No. 10 ranking will prove a worthy challenge for No. 3 Texas, heading to Michigan’s “Big House” in front of 100,000+ fans on Saturday.

Texas brought it all to the table in Week 1. Strong defense, overwhelming offense, and a team hungry to make their mark in the SEC. Michigan did not have as thorough a thrashing of Fresno State as Texas did of Colorado State. The final score, 30-10, didn’t have quite the same gap as the Texas Longhorns 52-0 win.

Michigan did not significantly pull away until the 4th quarter, gaining 17 points. According to this ESPN recap, a clear weakness of Michigan’s is due to the promotion of several defensive backs to the NFL. Wolverines quarterback Davis Warren, a former walk-on and leukemia survivor, put up an impressive performance and threw the final-quarter touchdown.

Brief Analysis

Whereas the Texas game’s result was clear fairly early on, Michigan was a little late to their own party. That kind of offense won’t serve them against Texas in Week 2. The matchup against the Texas Longhorns is arguably one of Michigan’s toughest games. They’ve got Quinn Ewers and a host of new transfer talent (Isaiah Bond, Golden, Bolden, and Johntay Cook) to contend with. This early conflict will set the stage for Texas to take on the bona fide powerhouse that is Michigan football.

Michigan certainly has a reputation to uphold, and their performance in Week 1 left much to be desired. Despite this, the Texas Longhorns are clearly under no illusions about the battle ahead. It sounds like Head Coach Steve Sarkisian is under no assumptions about the difficulty of the match. “We’re gonna(sic) be in for a dogfight,” he warns, citing Michigan’s recent record and historical accomplishments.

Final Thoughts

Expect Quinn Ewers to continue putting in work as the Texas Longhorns starting QB. His phenomenal start was piled on by Backup QB Arch Manning’s record-setting touchdowns. Quinn Ewers hasn’t faced off against Michigan yet – having been injured during their previous matchup. He and the Texas offense are not-so-secret weapons for the Texas Longhorns.

Without Jim Harbaugh, the Michigan Wolverines must rely on Head Coach Sherrone Moore, their former offensive coordinator. They’ll need to be on their full guard against Texas this weekend. Even if they don’t end up dealing with Texas’ double-trouble quarterback situation.
