Powerful Texas Longhorns Fortified By Freshmen In 2024

Texas Longhorns SEC Arch Manning

An exhilarating display of Texas Longhorns football kicked off the 2024 season on Saturday. Touchdowns were a major component of each quarter. Steady marches down the field by Texas were buoyed by their incoming freshmen players. In their first shutout of the season, the Texas Longhorns made quite a few less-than-subtle statements. In Austin, the forecast for wins is as bright as the Texas sun. All eyes may be on the Texas quarterback situation with Arch Manning and Quinn Ewers, but don’t sleep on these new additions to the team.

High Hopes For New Talent

The 44 freshmen on the Texas Longhorns this year have their work cut out for them. A new conference, a brutal schedule, and player injuries are all working against this Texas team. But, if Saturday’s opener was any indication, their SEC rivals are in for an unpleasant shock.

Several new players came in looking to make their mark, from receivers to defenders. Every quarter saw significant action. The depth this Longhorn team possesses was on full display, and boy what a show.

Texas Barrels Into SEC

Right from the start, the defense stood tall and firm. Defensive Back Warren Roberson (pictured above), a redshirt freshman, recorded a key tackle and was a fixture on the line all game. Other notable defensive back tackles and performances came from Kobe Black, Jordon Johnson-Rubell, and Wardell Mack – who himself caught a stellar interception in the final minutes.

Edge rusher from Austin, TX Colton Vasek played his part, recording two tackles. There was massive output from Running Back Jerrick Gibson and Wide Receiver Ryan Wingo. Gibson recorded 67 rushing yards total and one touchdown. Wingo snagged 70 yards total, including the longest reception of the day at 30 yards. With all this talent, the Texas Longhorns look set to push their way into the SEC Championships with force.

Keep An Eye On These Players

Ryan Wingo had an extraordinary start, but he isn’t the only one to watch. Receivers like he and Isaiah Bond will help stabilize the Texas offense. Texas’ defense has solid support, as demonstrated above. It will be interesting to see how many more standouts come out of the freshmen of the Texas Longhorns.

Arch Manning sits atop this category. The redshirt freshman staying is good news for the Texas Longhorns and bad news for their opponents. In a historic first outing, the quarterback threw his first career touchdown pass. He would also rush one in himself and add some thrilling points to Texas’ lead.

Final Thoughts

The Texas Longhorns have begun the 2024 season with a bang. It was their first season-opening shutout since 2004. Every year a new crop of players joins the fray, but this class in particular is a strong addition to the already highly-ranked Texas Longhorns. The team has a monster season ahead of them, but the freshmen seem ready to rise to the challenge.
