The Texas Longhorns have been on the brink of a national championship as of late and there is a lot of excitement in the program. With the rumors circulating regarding coach Steve Sarkisian being a popular name for NFL teams searching for a coach, the Longhorns announced they have agreed to a contract extension with their football coach. This comes after an extension that was agreed upon last year. Let’s look at what this means going forward for the Texas Longhorns.

The Texas Longhorns have reportedly made the decision to extend coach Steve Sarkisian once again after agreeing to a four-year extension last year. This extension is going to keep Sarkisian for an additional season and will now keep him with the Longhorns through the 2031 season. A big reason for the extension was the rumors that NFL teams were interested but it is important to note that he never had any interviews with teams, despite two teams being interested in him.

Steve Sarkisian has been with the Texas Longhorns since the 2021 season and has posted a 38-17 record, including a 2-3 bowl record over his first four seasons. He has been a stabilizing figure as the program finished its first season in the Southeastern Conference after leaving the Big 12. They were able to compete in the SEC Championship Game and lost in the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Cotton Bowl against the Ohio State Buckeyes.

What does the Texas Longhorns look like in 2025?

The Texas Longhorns have seen many significant pieces already make their decision regarding their future, whether they entered the 2025 NFL draft, entered the NCAA Transfer Portal, or returned to the team. The big news was seeing quarterback Quinn Ewers enter the NFL draft and that meaning Arch Manning is expected to be the starting quarterback for the Texas Longhorns in 2025. He joins wide receiver Isaiah Bond, offensive lineman Kelvin Banks Jr, defensive back Jahdae Barron, defensive lineman Alfred Collins, wide receiver Matthew Golden, tight end Gunnar Helm, defensive back Gavin Holmes, offensive lineman Jake Majors, defensive back Andrew Mukuba, and offensive lineman Cam Williams to head to the NFL draft.

This Longhorns team is going to look very different but expect coach Steve Sarkisian to be able to attract talent in the NCAA Transfer Portal to come and join a team that should still be competitive in the SEC and be in contention once again for the national championship.
