Texas Longhorns Arch Manning Reveals Why He Stayed With The Program

Texas Longhorns SEC Arch Manning

The Texas Longhorns made big waves in 2023 when they landed Arch Manning, the number one recruit in the 2023 class. His name comes with high expectations, and diehard fans were excited to grab a top-tier quarterback. However, many got nervous when Quinn Ewers announced he would be staying for another year. The transfer portal makes it easier than ever for players to switch teams, and many have wondered whether Manning would go to another program rather than sit behind Ewers. He decided to stay and revealed why in a recent interview.

The 19-year-old phenom isn’t worried about spending another year on the bench. He wants to be with the Texas Longhorns. It has been his dream to play with the program and he wasn’t about to give that up for more playing time. He spoke with Larry Holder of The Athletic and had this to say.

“It’s tough because you want to be out there playing with your boys. But [it came down to] just realizing there’s nowhere else I want to be, and it was my dream to play at Texas. I’m going to stick it out and play there eventually.”

Arch Manning is playing the long game. Ewers only has one more year of eligibility, meaning Manning is the likely starter for 2025. The Texas Longhorns will also get plenty of national attention. They are now in the SEC, which is the premiere conference in college football. Every week will be a clash of top teams and there should be no shortage of opportunities for the College Football Playoff. While Manning could have started for another team, he would have lost out on playing for one of the greatest college football programs in history. Quinn Ewers had nothing but praise for the young player.

“I think he understands that what he’s got here is he’s gonna be the most ready whenever he goes to the NFL. I think coach Sark [Steve Sarkisian] does the best job getting quarterbacks ready for the NFL and developing guys. [Manning will] be playing in his third year. He’ll be more than comfortable in operating the offense, and it’s just a really good fit for him.”

2024 Outlook

The Texas Longhorns have one of the toughest schedules in college football. It all starts in the second week when they have to travel to the Big House to take on the defending champs. While the Wolverines lost a lot of talent, Sherrone Moore has this team ready to compete. It definitely won’t be an easy win. When SEC play starts, games against Georgia, Oklahoma, Florida, Kentucky, and Texas A&M are on the schedule. If Texas wants to get back to the College Football Playoff, they need to be at their best week in and week out.

The future of the Texas Longhorns looks bright. Ewers is a preseason Heisman candidate and they have another one waiting in the wings in Arch Manning. For the longest time, the Longhorns have struggled to sustain any type of success. They now seem set up to continue to compete for years to come.
