WBC Junior Middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora’s promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz, was asked about a potential Terence Crawford fight. Lewkowicz says Crawford will not express interest in the WBO-ordered fight with Fundora until every attempt has been made to stage the show with Mexican boxing great Canelo Alvarez.
Canelo is not completely ruling out the fight with him and has mentioned that if the fight were to take place, it must be accompanied by an offer to have a huge amount of cash. At this point, for Canelo, there is not much in the line of any kind of legacy that would justify a fight with Terence which must bring us back to the mercenary aspect.
In Lewkowicz’s perspective, Crawford is more interested in getting a mammoth purse fight awaiting the outcomes of Canelo’s expected unified super middleweight titles tussle with Edgar Berlanga on the 14th of September.
Terence Crawford’s Focus on Financial Gain Over Legacy
Lewkowicz goes to the extent of stating that Terence Crawford decided to challenge Canelo to have a nice financial bounty rather than uplifting his legacy. Nevertheless, Fundora seems not to be on his radar until the much-anticipated fight against Canelo does not come to fruition. However, Lewkowicz believes that if the two faced each other in the ring, Fundora would win because he was in the ring on August 3rd where he fought WBA champion Israil Madrimov.
In the meantime, in his 154-pound debut, he won the fight with a close margin over Madrimov by collecting scores of 37-112, 38-112, and 37-112. Still, Lewkowicz’s victory was not as smooth as it seemed. Terence Crawford had to put in significantly more effort to win his recent fight, which could pose a serious challenge if he faces the much taller and stronger Fundora in the future.
Fundora’s Confidence Against an Aging Crawford
Specifically, Fundora is aggressive in offense and stands 6’6,” which will be intimidating to confront. Lewkowicz said that Terence Crawford would be much more pressed than against Madrimov if faced with Fundora. Terence Crawford might not be able to withstand the level of punishment Fundora usually delivers to opponents. Given the age difference and Crawford’s apparent vulnerability at 154 pounds, Fundora’s camp is confident in their chances should the fight happen.
Uncertain Future for Crawford-Fundora Matchup
Questions will arise as to whether this fight will materialize or not. This is because he was recently on the receiving end of a match against Madrimov, which did not attract many PPV sales, and one wonders whether Saudi investors would be willing to fund the fight. Terence is not that popular among ordinary boxing enthusiasts. Hence the potential of such a fight with Fundora will not be good financially if Crawford is not boxing against a big lottery like Canelo or Errol Spence.
In conclusion, although the speculated match-up of boxing sensation between Terence and Fundora though may sound like an old-school war of a David and Goliath style, the probability of it coming to reality is at the mercy of his negotiation with Canelo Alvarez, undoubtedly, the golden goose of boxing. For now, Fundora and his team may just have to wait and see what Terence decides to do next.
