The leading boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has entered the ring in the warring debate by suggesting Terence Crawford might be waiting for a big-money fight with the Mexican sensation, Canelo Alvarez. From Hearn’s own words, this might be the only other avenue open to retirement if he does not clinch this mega-fight. He thinks that he has reached a stage in his career where hunger and ambition are overshadowed by the money he wants to earn, which is why he won’t fight young powerful names like Jaron Ennis.
Terence Crawford’s Fight with Canelo Alvarez
The 38-year-old Terence Crawford, who is yet to taste a defeat in his boxing career, boasts of a record of 41-0 with 31 knockouts and is said to be keen on facing Canelo Alvarez. The potential payday from such a fight could be monumental, a dream that would see Crawford earn more than what he would get from a fight against the current set of 154-pound contenders. Eddie Hearn hopes that the money from a Canelo’s match will translate to the amount that can be made from five or six fights against top junior middleweights.
But arguably, Canelo does not appear too enthusiastic about this matchup at the very least, especially with speculations going around that the Mexican fighter may ask for as much as $100M for the fight. If this is real, the fight doesn’t seem to be on the uptake of happening unless he is ready to take a hit on the monetary front he has set.
Time Is Running Out
The most important constraint that affects Terence Crawford to a large extent is time. Hearn said that Terence Crawford’s career is at the back end, and with him only fighting once a year, his career is on the verge of the end and the career clock is ticking. The longer he has to wait for the fight with Canelo, the harder it will be to keep on dominating, especially now that the pound-for-pound king is eyeing the 154-pound division packed with stiff competition. Moreover, the level of competition is likely to rise as the ‘upcoming’ fighters, those who are younger and stronger than Crawford, appear in the division to cut short the legendary’s career in vain.
Crawford’s Win Over Israil Madrimov
In regards to Terence Crawford, Hearn also spoke about the fact that his charge was somewhat tested by WBA junior middleweight titleholder Israil Madrimov, implying that the experience may have taken the shine off another top name at the weight of the American. It is possible that the Matchroom fight of Madrimov gave a bitter lesson to him of what he expects when opting for the remaining belts at 154 pounds.
Unlike his fairly easy ride to unified champion at welterweight where he won a belt with a career-best performance against a past Errol Spence and a paper champion Jeff Horn, the journey to unified champion at junior middleweight was going to be erratic.
According to Hearn, his boxing career depends on whether he will be able to get Canelo. Without it, retirement looks more like a realistic proposition than a comeback to the ring with such as Jaron Ennis not to mention the other high-risk 154-pounders. It’s now up to those who can make this fight happen, but it’s clear that he wants it for the money, not because he’s eager to face the new fighters in the division.
