Tennessee Volunteers Team Preview
The Vols are off to a scorching hot start so far this season. They are averaging 60.0 points per game through two games, which only trails Ole Miss’ 64.0 points per game nationally. Tennessee leads the SEC with 276.5 rushing yards per game, which is good enough for 12th in the country and fifth among Power 4 conferences.
Tennessee hasn’t seen much resistance thus far, even though they have played a nationally ranked Power 4 program in North Carolina State. The Wolfpack weren’t quite as overmatched as Chattanooga was in week one, but they still didn’t provide much in terms of a threat. The Volunteers used a late first half pick six to propel them to the lopsided 51-10 victory last week.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Nico Iamaleava has been as good as the high expectations that were placed on him in the preseason. He is 13th in the country with a 74.5% completion percentage and is tied for 19th with five passing touchdowns. He has also added another touchdown on the ground. Junior running back Dylan Sampson leads the SEC in rushing and is ninth in the country with 256 yards. He is also tied for third in the country with five rushing touchdowns.
On defense, Tennessee is tenth in the country in scoring defense. The Vols are only allowing 6.5 points per game, but have not allowed an offensive touchdown through two games. The only touchdown Tennessee has given up was a third quarter pick six against NC State last Saturday. The strength of the defense has been the suffocating play of the defensive line. The Volunteers are only allowing 56.5 yards per game on the ground and 185 yards per game of total offense.
Kent State Golden Flashes Team Preview
The start of the season has not been kind to Kent State. After losing to Pittsburgh 55-24, the Golden Flashes were then upset at home by FCS opponent St. Francis PA last weekend. Quarterback Devin Kargman has not been very effective, only throwing for 374 yards through two games. Their run game hasn’t been any better. Senior running back Ky Thomas leads the team with 79 yards on 29 carries. His 2.7 yards per carry is only boosted by his 32 yard season long.
They rank 10th out of 12 MAC teams in total offense with 246.0 yards per game and 11th with 54.5 yards rushing per game. Defensively, Kent State also comes in 11th out of 12 conference teams in total defense, allowing 484.5 yards per game.
