It has been over 300 days since the Georgia Bulldogs played a home game in Athens, Georgia. This weekend, the Bulldogs (1-0) will welcome the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles to Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium for the opening home contest of the 2024 college football season.
Last weekend, No. 1-ranked Georgia dismantled No. 14 Clemson, 34-3. The Tigers were able to keep the game close in the first have before Georgia’s offense exploded for 28 points following the halftime adjustments. Carson Beck threw for a pair of touchdowns on 278 yards through the air. Running backs Nate Frazier and Cash Jones both found the endzone as well running the football in a well-rounded attack for Georgia.
Tech’s season-opening comeback falls short
Tennessee Tech squad suffered a tough 32-25 defeat to Middle Tennessee. Tennessee Tech vs. Georgia Bulldogs Contest = “Show Me The Money”
There is little doubt this is a money-making game for the Tennessee Tech program. First-season Head Coach Bobby Wilder will lead his squad into the truest David vs. Goliath athletic battle that we tend to see in the early days of the college football season. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the University of Georgia is reportedly paying Tennessee Tech $550,000 for the appearance in a football game this season. Tech Head Coach Bobby Wilder spoke highly of Georgia’s leader Kirby Smart and his squad:
“This it the best football team in the country, and Kirby Smart is the best coach in college football, in my opinion,” Wilder said. “I believe he’s the voice of college football now with Nick Saban retiring.”
This is the 4th time Tennesse Tech has battled the No. 1 team in the country. According to the available online statements on the Tennessee Tech website, the estimated budget for the entire season of football was around 1.75 million dollars. This figure includes coaching staff salaries, travel, and operating expenses. While it is only an estimate in a budget, it is easy to see how a football program would take one game that covers 30% of their overall operating expenses for the season once that check clears from UGA.
Georgia Expected To Claim Home Opener
According to Sports Illustrated, the opening line in the game as of writing is the Georgia Bulldogs as a 53.5-point favorite. This will be the third time in program history that Georgia has hosted Tennessee Tech. In 1943, UGA smashed Tech by a score of 67-0. It was slightly closer in 2009 with Georgia earning a 38-0 win over the Golden Eagles.
